I think that teenagers would be more interested than adults. This is about a lovestuck, dumb 18 year old girl.

A heartwarming story that fosters an appreciation for autistic people

I liked this story. It was rather short, even for a short story, about 31 pages of actual text. I am a fan of Sabrina Jeffries' fun Regency romances, so I gave this one a try. It is very different in subject matter from her romances, but it still has multifaceted characters that you easily connect with and a story that draws you in. It was a nicely uplifting story. FYI, unlike the author's romance books, this story is told in the first person point of view.

How to classify this story? I would call it general fiction or southern (American) fiction. It has themes of family, death, small town life, and autism. What the story is about: a recently deceased mother of baby twins has not yet passed on to heaven because she is worried about the welfare of her baby girls. Her sister and brother-in-law, who are taking in the babies, are wonderful loving people, but the ghostly mother is worried about their adult autistic son who has severe autism. The mother had bad previous experiences with this young man and does not want him around her babies, but things are not as she assumes.

This story lovingly fosters understanding of autistic people. The author herself has a grown son with autism, and I can tell that this story is dear to her heart. I think that this story would be appropriate for age 13+.

A Wonderful Story

This is a story of love, narrated by Sunny, a ghost. She and her husband Cam recently died and Cam has already moved on. But Sunny can't go until she knows their twin babies will be all right. They're now living with Sunny's sister and brother-in-law, Honey and Bert. That's not the problem. Sunny fears their adult son with autism will hurt the babies -- or worse.

Sunny spent little time with the nephew who very much isn't the quiet, high-functioning person with autism familiar from Hollywood. His is the type which requires his mother to wear only one of two colors or he'll have a fit for days. Details like that are foremost in Sunny's mind as she worries about what kind of life her babies will have in that home.

But as the story unfolds, we see the power of love.

This was an amazing story which gently educated while never preaching. It was written with the smart, beautiful prose of Sabrina Jeffries's other works. And while there's no Regency lord in sight just waiting to find his lady, this is a true love story. I highly recommend.

great holiday read

Although Fay Weldon is not on my list of favourite

authors, the blurb on this book interested me and I

did really enjoy it's escapism. It is more like a

series of short stories with a linked narration.

After you get past the highly unlikely premise of

these women choosing to spend Christmas in a

Scottish spa, it was easy to be drawn into the

women's tales. I almost felt as if I was one of

them, sitting in the Jacuzzi, listening to the weird

wonderful and sometimes macabre stories that unfold.

I have also listened to the abridged version and do

prefer Sian Thomas reading to Rula Lenska who tends

to over emphasise her speech.

Enjoyable, but flawed

Overall I thought the book worth listening to, but didn't think it was Fay Weldon at her best. Her hall-mark divergent mind is on full-throttle: murder, deceit, supernatural happenings, abduction by Arab Sheiks and the bad and selfish behaviour of men, of which there is too much: things have moved on from the early days of the women's movement and it sounds out-dated. The stories are varied, some better than others.

Very Fay Weldon

A 21st century Canterbury Tales.

Rather too many characters in the first chapter. If you don't concentrate, you may find yourself thinking who? later on.

Rula Lenska tries hard with the accents but she doesn't do Liverpool. She tries but her Liverpudlian character meanders from Scotland to Ireland via Northumbria-I even spotted Welsh Valleys in there!

Tended to drag somewhat and become rather samey but easy to listen to while gardening (which I hate)

When I went into the pages of this book I discovered a new way of understanding my senses and my desires. As important as learning how to read, through the lenses of a poetic an sensous adventure. Telling us the story of Fatma, in the imaginary and walled city of Mogador, this book opens a question about women's desire that only each one of us, women readers, can answer. This is a masterpiece of subtility, a book to share with the dearest persons, a tale to read and read again. I found an english translation of this book as Mogador, published in San Francisco by City Lights. The sequel's title of Los nombres del aire is En los labios del agua. I could not find an english translation. Anyway, both books exists in french. Les visages de l'air, and Les levres de l'eau. An amazing experience for the senses more than a text to read.

Entertaining

I love Paul Theroux's fiction. Though not his best, these two short novels are pretty good. Dr. Savage was made into a movie with Sigourney Weaver in the lead - but the movie bore only scant resemblance to the book. It's fun to read the book and then laugh all the way through the movie!

This is a very good read for a rainy Sunday Afternoon

Enjoyed the movie; but because I am a long-time fan of Sigourney Weaver. Book is a good one; but a little less than "page turning" excitement.

One Winner, One Clunker

Half Moon Street consists of two novellas.

"Dr. Slaughter," the first work, and the one on which the movie "Half Moon Street" is based is so far superior to the movie, and so different in its plot, theme and message, as to constitute a totally different story. The book shows how a person who lives for the moment can bring tragedy down on herself and those around her. Throughout the story, wheels are turning in the background, undermining Dr. Slaughter's unconventional life and dooming the man she is most attracted to. Then everything snaps shut on her like a mousetrap. This is a stunning acheivement.

"Dr. De Marr" the other story is quite disappointing, a perfect illustration of why writers are supposed to show rather than to describe. The intriguing tale of a pair of twins and their reconnection after many years, we are treated to a long essay dragging us through the relationship.

I would suggest that you (i) avoid the movie, (ii) buy the book, and (iii) stop reading after the first (and longer of the two) stories.

A stranger in a stranger land - London

Actually, this edition has two novellas - "Dr. Slaughter" neing the basis for the film of the same name. After seeing the dissappointing film, I was unexpectedly shocked to discover how I could be absorbed by amoral heroine and her challenges. Mostly, this is thanks to Paul Theroux's crisp and inviting prose. While today's authors repeatedly assure us of their expert credentials in writing technothrillers, political thrillers, historical fiction, legal thrillers and so on, only Paul Theroux triumphs on an endless and rariefied reservoir of dissassociation, being an alien and an outsider. Dr. Slaughter, a brilliant and beautiful specialist in petro-economics, is already well versed in using sexual favors to supplement a meager income when she becomes "an escort". Using her dissassociation as a shield against the monumental dreariness of her existence (her miserable flat in London seems perpetually frozen), she prospers, never realizing her proximity to the true love that eludes her or the danger she places others into. The revelation at the end seems no surprise, yet packs an emotional wallop.

Poorly paced, misleadingly titled, all around horrid

Read this book as the premise sounded very interesting. However, I was very let down to find that the story focused more on the two leads' infatuation for music and each other and much less so a game of cat and mouse with numbers. The lack of an actual plot for the first 75% of the book was filled with little more than back and forth high school drama and overtly quirky humor that insisted upon itself.

When the "conflict" finally comes into play, it feels too little, too late as it plays catch up for time wasted beforehand. A villain who is almost never placed in any scenes and a detestable excuse for a bumbling henchman hardly make do for a decent conflict, let alone decent antagonists. After a series of poorly written deus ex machinas, the main character's talent and penchant for numbers is wasted in a single, anticlimactic moment. SPOILER ALERT: He has to figure out a lock combination to free his friends from a storage locker, and miraculously deduces it be 21-7-3 since they are in a casino.

If you are going to have a misleading title and a plot that has less to do with math geniuses and more to do with young-teen self worth, then fine. But at least make the characters well written and give them a personality, or conflicts that are not so contrived.

Great book, suspenseful and thrilling. Hard to put down. Writing reminds me somewhat of Michael Crichton, very entertaining read. Highly recommend this book.

Skeptic

I am an avid thriller/medical thriller reader, and I have been for nearly 40 years.

Skeptic is far and above the best such book I have ever read because it unleashes a new way of looking at the world. It is extremely well-writen and will leave you haunted by new concepts that are themselves thrilling beyond belief. This man makes Robin Cook look like a 3rd grader.

Good read for thriller fans

Jack Collier has a brilliant idea that will not only attain him his Ph.D. from Harvard, but cure cancer. However, his faculty advisor Dr. Dutton steals the ideal of training Strep A bacteria to eat tumors leaving Jack expelled for plagiarism and feeling heartbroken.

Jack flees Harvard to seek his former girlfriend who is dying from cancer. However, unbeknownst to Jack he has become infected with his cure, turning him into a modern day but deadlier Typhoid Mary. He kills anyone who comes in physical contact with him. With the FBI wanting to stop Jack before others die, while others want Jack dead before he reveals the truth, he continues his trek cross country to try to save a life.

THE CARRIER is an exciting, fast-paced medical thriller that falls a bit short of being a classic horror tale. The story line moves so fast that readers will finish it quickly, but feel very little towards the characters in the process. Even though this tale is not quite what it could have been, any one skeptical about Holden Scott's talent will realize he is a major player who needs to know speed kills interesting plots, even one that is still fun to read.

Excellent Medical Thriller!

Where are more books from this surprise author? Someone didn't do their job at the publishing company... this book is right up there with Robin Cook thrillers and should have been a number one best seller. I am a picky reader and this book is first rate, I want more!! I am going to buy Skeptic now and hope for more novels.... buy this one, you will not be disappointed!

Fast Moving Medical Thriller

"The Carrier" by Holden Scott, St. Martin's Press, 2000.

A Fast Moving Book mixing modern gene therapy with the modern concern for the upcoming plague.

The author, Scott Holden, combines a fairly deep knowledge of modern genetic laboratories with a story of politics in the university setting. His main character is a genius Ph. D. candidate (Jack Collier) from New Jersey who ignores the jealousies on the university campus (Harvard of all places) until his advisor, Professor Dutton springs a rather large conspiracy on Jack. Jack Collier is expelled for plagiarism, while it is Dutton who had done the real plagiarism. In hopes of a Nobel Prize, Dutton steals Jack's work, which was intended as a cure for cancer. In stealing Jack's discovery, Prof. Dutton inadvertently changes the cure into a killer. Jack carries the killer/cure across the United States, while being pursued by FBI agents, one of whom is a psycho and another a Ph.D.
