This is a novel that when it was first published unleashed the fury of those who felt alluded by it, and they rushed to declare it an immoral work. The book was forbidden for that reason. This novel symbolizes the British empire, with an entertaining plot, and has been considered one of the greatest works of English literature in the 20th century.

    Title: Waterloo
    Author: Karen Olsson
    Narrator: Anna Fields
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-27-06
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 6 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
"You're in a slump." Nick Lasseter's boss is talking about his job performance as a reporter for the Waterloo Weekly, but he might as well be talking about Nick's whole life. His current assignment, a profile of a legendary liberal ex-congressman, is in trouble even before the subject abruptly dies. When Nick grudgingly agrees to write a piece about a rising female Republican legislator, he stumbles onto a political fight in which the good guys and bad guys start to seem interchangeable. When Nick gets involved with the late congressman's confidante, it seems that not even the deceased can be relied on to stick to their stories. Some things never change: the moral ambiguity of practical politics, and the hilarious cluelessness of young men in love.
    Critic Reviews:
"With clean, brisk prose, Olsson brings a specific, authentic sense of character, time, and place to this story of Texas politicians and muckrakers." (Publishers Weekly) "Olsson displays an enviably light touch and a deep affection for her hometown." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
Much less than a mundane beach read
Couldn't find a reason to want to know about the characters. Very limited storyline and character development.
    What a disappointment
Ugly cover, lousy title...and the book itself! Bland, boring, unconvincing. There's nothing wrong with having characters who are slackers, but it might help to have the slackers be interesting or even a little nuts. Nothing is at stake in this book--for anybody. And Olsson apparently has no sense of humor--her charactrers are all very grim and very earnest, and she's very condescending not only the poor boring dopes that inhabit her book but to her readers as well. Very sad. And why use "Waterloo" for Austin--especially since the book jacket says "Austin"? Stupid.
The sound you hear is Billy Lee Brammer spinning in his grave....
    What Not to Write
I'm this novel's ideal demographic: I've lived in Austin for three decades; I love and hate the place; I have a degree from UT; and I'm certainly a card-carrying liberal, one who has even subscribed to The Nation (to which the author has contributed). But I loathed this book. Not because it wasn't true to "my" city, but because its author thought she had to write Art instead of telling a story. By page 90, I was wondering if the story would ever begin -- or if I'd ever find anything to admire in the person who, I surmised after many choppy chapters, was the main character. But there was nothing to admire or to even vaguely like in the struggling Austin Chronicle journalist who is the protagonist. I did make it to the end of the book, because of the odd moment of funny truthfulness or because some vivid detail was keenly rendered. For that, I give the novel one star.
The best novel to come out of Texas in years
In this funny, ambitious, and extremely accomplished first novel, Karen Olsson portrays past and present, hip and square, liberal and conservative, youth and maturity, and public (political) life vs. private with a deftness and wisdom that few writers can match, much less one on the front end of her career.

In his first novel, Stephen Clarke gives a laugh-out-loud account of the pleasures and perils of being a Brit in France. Less quaint than A Year in Provence, less chocolatey than Chocolat, A Year in the Merde will tell you how to get served by the grumpiest Parisian waiter; how to make perfect vinaigrette every time; how to make amour, not war; and how not to buy a house in the French countryside.

I'm French and I loved it
As a French myself I had no problems with this book! Infact I thought it was really funny. He uses the good old jokes about the French and the observations in the book are very true! I recognised a lot of things about the French in here. I'd recommend it to everyone - French people included.
    A English man abroad
I loved this. I could relate to so much of this story it was uncanny.

Which character as performed by Michael Praed was your favourite?
    Jean-Marie Martin
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
no its quite long but ive listened to it lots of times
    Hillarious, brilliantly narrated novel
The way how Michael Praed narrates this funny story about French and English...ehm..differences is a pure joy. Definitely is worth buying.
    Hilarious!!
Be prepare to surprise your neighbours with unpredictable waves of laugh whilst listening this fab piece. Adventures of young Englishman in Paris are just amazing thing. Very well transformed from written version to audible one. Particular use of distort-spelled words and sentences went amazing way. I am sure you will recommend this audio book to all your friends (as I did). I can't wait for the second part of the story in audio version.

    Publisher's Summary:
Reba runs away from her desolate rural community for the lure of New York City. Her tall and awkward frame lands her work modeling, but she is not prepared for the glamorous, drug-fueled life of a celebrated mannequin. After a series of painful relationships, she sees hope and an exit toward stability in the man who saves her brother's life.
That man is Rick, a successful SoHo general practitioner with an idyllic life that has left him discontented. He doesn't take Reba seriously at first, but soon finds himself so enmeshed in her beauty that he risks losing everything: his home, his children, and his beloved wife.
Wasted Beauty is master monologist Bogosian's enthralling journey through the high life of drugs, fashion celebrity, middle-class guilt, and sexual obsession.
    Critic Reviews:
"A well-crafted novel that's also a vicarious walk on the wild side....It's a great guilty pleasure of a story line (brainy schlump meets gorgeous goddess), and Bogosian fills it with fresh, frank turns of phrase." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Highly recommended
I loved this book. It's not for everyone; it is grim in parts and weaves drugs and mindless sex throughout the story. Eric Bogosian is a terrific writer. Many of the passages, descriptions and metaphors display such creative brilliance that for once I wish I had read the book rather than listened to it.
    Tried Hard
This is a novel about trying and failing. I'm not referring to the characters here - I'm referring to the author. Bogosian principally tries hard to imagine the life of a rags to riches to ruin farm girl turned model (discovered homeless! bright lights! big city! drugs! beaches! drugs! meaningless sex! drugs!) and the mid-life crisis of a married doctor with two kids much given to annoying inner dialog (I'm good! I'm bad! I'm a jerk! She loves me! Sho loves me not!) she has an affair with.
Not for me, anyway. Jaklak sez check it out if you're into this kind of thing. Otherwise, keep walking.
    Entertaining and Inspiring . . .
A comic-style tragedy that reveals the contemporary human conditions, poignant, helpless, nonchalant, yet emotionally motivating and philosophically inspiriting, it is best for men age between 45 and 60. Parental and/or grand-parental guidance are recommended for the younger listeners.
    Waste of time
This was an awful book. The characters were underdeveloped, and the authors main purpose was to detail a man going through a midlife crisis and a successful model with a drug habit and obsession with older men. The author hints towards the models sexual encounters with these older men relating to possible father issues. But he never expands. He throws into the mix a brother dealing with drugs and mental illnessbecause he has sexual thoughts of his sister, and the models first job working at a bank, becoming interested in a man the age of her father, and ending with her giving him oral sex because thats what you do when you love someone.
I would not recommend this book to anyone. Dont waste your money or time on this one.

    Title: High Plains Tango
    Author: Robert James Waller
    Narrator: Sam Freed

Length: 5 hrs and 1 min
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-24-05
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
The wild places are where no one is looking anymore. Out there on the high plains, among the Sioux reservations and the silent buttes, among the small towns dying and the people with them, you can hear the wind. And on the back of the wind is the sound of an old accordion, tangos, mingling with the lonely thump of a single drum in the nighttime and a far-off warrior's cry. On the back of the wind is the smell of worn saddle leather and sawdust, of sandalwood, and smoke from ancient ceremonial fires. To this, to a town called Salamander, comes Carlisle McMillan, a traveler and master carpenter seeking a place of quiet amid the grinding roar of progress. Near Wolf Butte, a strange and apparently haunted monolith, he finds his quiet, or so he believes, and begins rebuilding a decrepit house as a tribute to the gruff old man who taught him a carpenter's skills, rebuilding his life at the same time.
He finds two very different, independent women: Gally Deveraux, who works at a diner in Salamander and longs for something more than she is, and Susanna Benteen, beautiful and enigmatic, who was drawn to Salamander for mysterious reasons of her own, a woman the town has labeled a witch. The women and his carpenter's trade and an old Indian known as Flute Player bring Carlisle a sense of contentment for a while. But his quiet is shattered as bulldozer treads begin to turn and the Yerkes County War commences. Run or stand your ground, that is Carlisle's dilemma, Gally on one side, Susanna on the other.
Robert James Waller's fully imagined characters become people we know and care for deeply.
High Plains Tango is the hauntingly lyrical story of a small town in the middle of nowhere, a town that forever changed, and was forever changed by, one man.

    Intrigue, Environmentalism, and Tribal Mysticism
The late Robert James Waller wrote some best sellers, but I wonder whether they would have moved as well had it not been for the movie, The Bridges of Madison County. I have liked his books, but not loved his writing style - this particular book, though, was a truly compelling and engaging story. The weaving in of characters from a previous book added to the interest, and the dabbling of Native American mysticism, environmental battles, and political corruption gave this particular story some real depth. It is worth reading - probably more than all of Waller's other books.
I'M SO IN LOVE WITH ALL HIS BOOKS
I'm only on chapter 10 because i'm so busy right now but I love all 4 of his first books! In fact this author is the only one who has been able to hold my interest! I'm a 73 year old grandma and read his beloved "BRIDGES" about 15 years ago. It was the first book I ever read from cover to cover! Mr. Waller takes you to places you never dreamed of! I'M SO IN LOVE WITH HIM! Plan to buy his other books!

    Title: Mr. Muo's Travelling Couch

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-16-05
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 65 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
After years of studying Freud in Paris, Mr. Muo returns home to introduce the blessings of psychoanalysis to 21st-century China. But it is his hidden purpose, to liberate his university sweetheart, now a political prisoner, that leads him to the sadistic local magistrate, Judge Di. The price of the Communist bureaucrat's clemency? A virgin maiden. And so our middle-aged hero Muo, a Westernized romantic and sexual innocent himself, sets off on his bicycle in search of a suitable girl.
Muo's quest will take him from a Chengdu mortuary to a rural panda habitat, from an insane asylum to the haunts of the marauding Lolo people. Along the way, he will lose a tooth, his virginity, and his once unshakable faith in psychoanalytic insight. But his quixotic idealism will not waver, even as he comes to see that the chivalrous heart may have room for more than one true love.
Dai Sijie's exuberant, touching, and most unlikely, romance is a triumph of unbridled imagination, a celebration of the yearning spirit.
    Critic Reviews:
"Wong makes his own performance the centerpiece of his reading, and his audacious willingness to place himself at the forefront is a gamble that pays off handsomely, providing a holistic unity that elevates this audiobook over the run of its peers." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)
    Members Reviews:
    Artful and poingnant
It took me a while to understand what the author was trying to say but when I did, I found the story poignant in the manner of Sophie's Choice and artfully done.
This author does not make it easy for the listener but, for me, the story was worth the extra work
    I am so confused!
OK, so it's about a Freudian psychoanalyst in post-revolution China. He eats, sleeps, and drinks sex, and I got very tired of it very early on. The observations about China were interesting, and some of the character development was fine, but I would not recommend this to my friends.
    Mr. Muo's Travelling Couch
    Disappointing.

    Good listen
Where does Let It Shine rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
One of the better narrators that I have listened to.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
    Not surprised
Which character as performed by Carole Boyd was your favorite?
    Ruth
If you could rename Let It Shine, what would you call it?
    Truth will out
    Any additional comments?
Although the story was a bit predictable Carole Boyd kept the interest with her excellent portrayal of the difference characters.
    Old Fashioned English Yarn
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
It's for the female's romantic loner, who likes old fashioned stories.
What could Josephine Cox have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
It fits the criterea and genre of a certain time frame but could use some more explosive (grab you by the collar and pull you in) interruptions to this 'every day (yawn) life' betrayal.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
I thought the narrator did a pretty good job (given the material), the characters are believable and atmosphere transending.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
It was dissapointing and I had to force myself back to it several times, just in case it got better and I could justify my 'purchase'.
    Any additional comments?
I was trying for something different in 'excapism' but this genre, or just this book, didn't open up a new area of interest for me.
    a complete waste of time
What would have made Let It Shine better?
Just read something else. This makes Barbara Taylor Bradford's books look like candidates for the Booker Prize.
What was most disappointing about Josephine Coxs story?
I didn't expect very much from this book except light entertainment - but it's some of the worst drivel I've ever read. Drippingly sentimental yet full of gratuitous violence and unmotivated evil which really adds nothing to the story. Characters are stereotypic in the worst possible way and the writing is really just one cliché after the other.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narration wasn't bad at all - but it couldn't save this book.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
No. The setting and plot (far-fetched as it is) could have made for an interesting story. England during the depression, trials and tribulations of a working class family. Other authors have done a much better job with these elements, though.
    Any additional comments?
I came over this book because it was on a special 4.95 offer at checkout. I thought it might be nice mindless entertainment for the holidays and didn't bother to check reviews here or elsewhere. I only finished it because I was bored and hate giving up on a book.
    HAPPY ENDING STORY
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
YES, ITS LOVELY TO LISTEN TO, NICE EASY STORY AND HAPPY.
