Rutgers University Project on Economics and Children
Younger students enter school with an experience-based knowledge of economics and the ability to learn a range of basic principles. Early introduction of key economics principles provides an important set of tools that form the building blocks of economic and financial literacy. This idea underlies the increased availability of interesting children's books to help younger learners gain a basic understanding of the economic and financial world around them.
The Lightning Bolt Books - Exploring Economics series makes a solid contribution to this growing literature with its lively photographs, clear and simple text directed to younger students, practice exercises, and helpful reference materials. The series cover a range of fundamental concepts in economics that students are often expected to learn in the early years. The books have some overlap in the concepts they define, albeit with differing levels of detail, making them informative as stand-alone books yet mutually reinforcing.
The series currently has six books. This book - Where Do We Keep Money? - highlights the role of banks in helping people save money and take out loans.
An excellent conversation starter about banks
I got 'Where Do We Keep Money - How Banks Work' for my 4th grader, who is homeschooled. This is at the perfect level for her - not too math oriented but an excellent beginner explanation of banking. Real-world illustrations, not cutesy ones, show real people and bank-related images. She wanted more information about making loans and how interest works, so we had a long discussion about that. I showed her our own bank statements, and she recognized them from the book. I just stumbled upon this book but now we are going to make it a whole unit study, and I will get the rest of the books in this series (Exploring Economics).

    Members Reviews:
This is an excellent book to introduce the young student to the science concept of energy ...
Children gathered in a pool on a hot summer's day can feel the toasty heat from the sun. You can feel it when you sip on a warm drink like hot chocolate. When you feel that warmth you are feeling heat which is "a form of energy." You can almost imagine you can feel the heat when you see a baker open an oven and pull out two hot loaves of bread. We use heat to bake some of our foods. Heat is "also used to make and shape things." Perhaps you can think of many other ways you can feel heat. In this book you'll learn how heat is made or created. Take for example, we benefit from the sun's energy which "heats Earth." There is also heat that "comes from inside the Earth," friction, the heat from a fire, and from inside our bodies.
There are three different ways that heat moves and you'll learn that "Heat travels in liquids and gases by convection." A drawing of a pot will show you how convection moves the water around in the pot until "all the water is equally warm." You can take a look at a diagram of how "convection moves heat through gases in the air" and you'll learn about conduction. If you've ever put a spoon into a hot bowl of soup you'll soon learn that the conduction between the soup and the spoon will make the spoon hotter. You'll also learn that "Heat travels through space by radiation," how heat is measured, how we use thermometers, why "living things need to stay warm, and how "people and animals keep their bodies the right temperature."
This is an excellent book to introduce the young student to the science concept of energy. The print is large and the more fluent reader should be able to tackle the text (set up in five "chapters") with minimal assistance from a teacher or by using the glossary. There are well chosen, vibrant photographs that illustrate the concepts being talked about. Captions with bullets also assist in understanding things like conduction. For example, there is a photograph of a cast iron pan on a board: "This wooden board keeps the metal pan's heat from burning the tablecloth." In the back of the book are instructions for a heat expansion activity, an index, a glossary, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore.

This is a basic nonfiction book that will introduce young readers to the Chinese New Year ...
There are all kinds of smiling people walking on the street with Chinese lanterns hanging overhead. They are celebrating the Chinese New Year, a âholiday [that] happens in January or February.â On one page you can see a diagram of a Chinese calendar. Every year represents a different animal, one of twelve different ones. In the springtime of each new year it âis a time to see family.â People also light candles and âhonor the gods they believe in.â You can see several rows of candles with many, many people reaching in to light them.
During Chinese New Year, families get together and eat all kinds of foods. Yum! Some of them âeat oranges tooâ and you can see a boy holding two of them in his hands. In the dark you can see Chinese lanterns glowing. They are red, but do you know why? Itâs because âthis color means good luck!â In this book youâll also learn about dance, lucky dragons, what children receive as gifts during the holiday, and what people celebrate. Do you celebrate Chinese New Year in your house? If not, you can join the families in this book as they celebrate!
This is a basic nonfiction book that will introduce young readers to the Chinese New Year. This large print nonfiction book is prefaced by a table of contents that will set the stage for future nonfiction texts. There are numerous pictures of people celebrating as well as those of the Chinese calendar and people holding a large dragon aloft. Each two-page spread has written text about the holiday on one side and a full-page, full color photograph on the opposite one. The layout pops with color and is a high-interest topic young readers will love. In the back of the book is a diagram of the Chinese Calendar, an index, and a âPicture Glossaryâ with captions.

    Construction Site Field Trip (fiction)
Fun fictional story about a field trip to a construction site to watch their new school being built! We could look around to our classroom and find all the same details!
Used for Building Theme at Pre-K
It's a good book for children four through six years old. Perhaps even a little older. It provides good information. My Pre-K class loved it. I didn't give it five stars because I found it to be a bit long. I read it in two sittings. Some children may not be able to sit for more than one chapter. The book in divided into chapters.

It was a cute book, very informational. Some of the content didn't apply to my class and the area we are in. So I would recommend only using the pages that have what you need. The vocabulary may be too advanced depending on the grade level. Overall I definitely will continue to use it!

This is a fun look at Firefighter Jim and how he helps protect his community ...
The class gathered outside the fire station to listen to Firefighter Jim tell them what he does. Two other firefighters were very busy scrubbing down a fire engine to keep it nice and clean. Firefighter Jim said to the boys and girls, "I solve problems called emergencies." Of course fighting fires wasn't the only thing firefighters do. In fact, they were soon to learn, they did other things like help people when they got into traffic accidents and rescue "people trapped by floods." Yes, they did all those things, but firefighters responded to medical emergencies the most.
Firefighter Jim claimed that "sometimes people who are sick or hurt need help fast." That's because their ambulance could get there before anyone else. Of course they did fight fires and some "firefighters stop wildfires." Maya was very interested in becoming a firefighter when she grew up and Firefighter Jim told her about going to a "fire academy." After his little talk, the children went into the fire house to learn about the tools firefighters use. They learned about an ax, a fire hose, an air pack, bunker gear, how hot a fire can get, a hook and ladder truck, and they learned many other intersting things about firefighters and fire safety.
This is a fun look at Firefighter Jim and how he helps protect his community. Elementary school children often go on field trips to visit fire stations and learn about the role firefighters have as they protect the residents. This is a beginning chapter book that will enable young students to be prepared to ask important questions that firefighters are trained to answer. This is one in a series, "Community Helpers," that will enable children to explore and learn about people who work in their communities. The newly independent reader can work through this book with a bit of assistance. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, an activity on making a fire escape plan, and additional book and website resources to explore.
