How I Optimize Linux On My 12 Year Old Macbook Air

Listen Later

Super lazy video I made on a whim about my favourite computer I own, my 2014 macbook air. I mostly use it for watching youtube videos, which it does like a champ, always without fans ramping up thank to a few optimizations.

I use:

Brave (built in adblock and optimized hardware acceleration. Plus it being flatpak makes me feel a little more secure.)
plugins:
-enhanced h264ify
-The Marvelous Suspender

I can't remember if it's really necessary, but try installing intel hardware acceleration:

sudo apt install intel-media-va-driver-non-free intel-media-va-driver-non-free:i386

Check if they're working with intel_gpu_top:

suto apt install intel_gpu_top
sudo intel_gpu_top
(I like checking the wattage in the top left corner)

Change battery charge level with this in the terminal:

echo 70 | sudo tee /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_control_end_threshold

Change that 70 to whatever you like, I just like 70%

To get the camera working check this out:

https://github.com/patjak/facetimehd/wiki/Installation#get-started-on-debian

I forgot to mention that I use redshift because the screen defaults to very blue. I just set it in some config file somewhere and forgot about it.

I also forgot to mention I use touche for touchpad gestures!

The only thing I've never figured out is how to get the sd card slot to work 😦

I probably said some wrong things, sorry haha
