Publisher's Summary:
Be kind. It sounds simple, so why is it so difficult? Most of us recognize that being kinder and more present would not only improve our own lives and the lives of our loved ones, but also strengthen our communities. Numerous scientific studies have confirmed that both living mindfully and being kind to others offer a host of benefits -- from stronger relationships to longer life. Yet even if we truly care and are motivated to change, we find that old habits keep us from achieving our goal of increasing our kindness and improving our relationships.
Members Reviews:
it is a great book. It addresses many things
I have only known Dough Carnine through his very important education research and books in education. This book addresses a different topic, but clearly the format of the book, which involves lots of applied activities, was influenced by his knowledge of effective instruction. In short, it is a great book. It addresses many things, one of which is negative mind wandering which most of us engage in. I have found the exercises to be very helpful in increasing my mindful kindness and decreasing covert and overt negative behavior.
Life Changing? Definitely!
It is rare that a book really moves me to change the way I think about life. This one did! Mr Carnine says he first discovered the power of kindness while in hospice work. He met a man who had ALS. The man could not move any part of his body from the neck down, yet he was always kind and upbeat to everyone. After working in hospice, Mr. Carnine became a meditation and spiritual mentor to men in prison for violent crimes. He says it was through these experiences, working with that one particular man in hospice, and being a mentor to the men in prison, that he became aware of the tremendous power of kindness. He believes that everyone is capable of changing unkind habits and building kind ones. This book, he says, is about how you can make those changes. The book talks about not only being kind to others, but being kind to yourself by breaking unhealthy habits. It describes the value - to individuals reading the book, and to society - of fusing kindness and mindfulness in all aspects of your life. The book is an excellent read, but if you really want to use it to its full advantage Mr. Carnine asks that you keep a journal. He gives exercises to do each day, starting with writing down three things that you are greatful for each day. Then he builds on that throughout the book with tools and exercises he says will "make these kinds of lasting changes." He talks about mindfulness and staying in the moment to really enjoy the moment you are in; things like feeling the wind on your face, listening to the wind in the trees, feeling the ground beneath your feet. I have already started using some of the basic tools such as the three-breath method, and really, really thinking about about the moment I am in and thinking about what I am saying to my spouse that is kind. This is truly an outstanding book that I believe can help anybody become kinder to themselves and others. I must also mention a second book that I am already engrossed in called "Saint Badass." It is about those prisoners that Mr. Carnine corresponded with. It is also outstanding.
What is a life worth living?
In a lot of ways, I was at odds with this book. It's not the easiest introduction to mindfulness, nor is it easily digested.
