How refugee shocks affect countries and workers

Listen Later

Video abstract for a scoping review on the consequences of many refugees arriving in a place in a short period of time (a.k.a. "refugee shock"). We document an increase in the number of studies, a focus on economic outcomes, and that in many cases the effects may be limited. Where there are negative effects, they tend to mean lower wages and higher unemployment, but the increase for radical right parties shows that part of the population are worried about negative consequences even if there are none or few.
