How Taylor Swifts Spotify clause is helping artists get paid

As of May 1, 2026, a key clause Taylor Swift negotiated in her 2018 record deal is officially paying off for thousands of artists. Universal Music Group (UMG) recently announced it is selling half of its 3% stake in Spotify, a move worth approximately $1.4 billion. Because of Swift's contract, the proceeds from this sale must be shared with all UMG artists.
