The Corinthians were building cliques: A few church members were loyalists to Paul, others stylists of Apollos. Still others were traditionalists who loved Peter, and a few were pietists with an over-spiritualized allegiance "only" to Christ. So Paul clarifies the danger of cliques, and reminds the church that the cross of Christ is a great equalizer.
