To illuminate their first winter festival, the fairies decide to borrow a piece of the moon. They convince the Man in the Moon, who allows them to take a slice on the condition that one fairy stays behind as collateral. The festival is a great success thanks to the borrowed moonlight. The fairies return the moon piece, retrieve their friend, and are granted permission to borrow from the moon whenever they need light, explaining why sometimes we only see a portion of it in the night sky.
