How The Stanford Library Misquotes Jesus

Bryan Fischer here with the Life and Liberty Minute. As a student at Stanford, I was struck by the words carved in granite above the entrance to the undergraduate library: “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” These majestic words came from the lips of Jesus. But Stanford only quoted part of what Jesus said. The full quote is this: “If you abide in My word, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” In order to be set free by the truth, we first have to know what the truth is. The truth, Jesus says, is found in My word - with the emphasis on the word “My” - and freedom is found only through abiding in His word. The way we tell the difference between truth and error is to line up what we hear next to the words of Jesus and keep what matches and reject what doesn’t. The next time around, Stanford needs to give its students the whole truth.
