In this episode of the Becoming You podcast, I share how you can ensure you’re always winning throughout your life.
Main Topics Discussed:
It’s probably not new to you that we tend to be our harshest critic. All of us have felt, at one point or another, that we aren’t living up to our potential. And when we tell ourselves that story, it can easily send us down a vicious spiral of self-pity and a lack of self-esteem.
How do we overcome this feeling of falling short of our potential? How do we do the work to set our sights on success—on winning—no matter how challenging our current circumstances?
There is no universal measurement stick for success.
Most of us live life with a specific image of what success means to us.
Money, power, fame, prestige…
But there is a disconnect between what society deems successful and what will truly make us happy. And usually, even if we experience a lot of the above-mentioned factors of “success”, we seldom feel any closer to feeling fulfilled.
We can change our criteria of success if we so choose.
Would you assess yourself as a successful person? Why or why not?
This is a really uncomfortable question, because our minds will tend to look for all the reasons we don’t think we’re successful.
This is another common issue: The belief that success means perfection in every area of our life. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Our external world is messy and imperfect. We have to accept that. And we also have to accept that success is internal, which brings me to my next point…
Your definition of success is crucial to whether or not you feel successful.
It’s hard work to change our default perspective, which often keeps us from experiencing growth.
Let’s dismantle the system (you could even call it the “prison”) you created for yourself, and build up a new one that puts you in the right frame of mind to strive for internal success—success on your own terms and no one else’s.
Create success on your own terms.
What if your new measuring stick for success is how much joy you can get out of the little moments between you and your family?
What if you prioritize small wins?
What if you focused on having a passion for your work instead of looking at the top of the corporate ladder as the threshold of your happiness?
What if you measured success by how much and how long you can endure, and not only when you cross the finish line?
What if I look at fulfillment through the lens of time freedom over the accumulation of wealth?
This is a personal journey. Get clear on your authentic desires and values, and keep your eyes on being true to yourself.
Your homework!
Here’s an exercise for you. It’s one that’s benefitted me immensely since I started doing it every night:
At the end of the day, before you go to bed, write down three things that you consider as “wins” that day. They can be absolutely anything. That’s what makes it easy!
Here’s the second part of the exercise:
Set up three things that you will “win” at tomorrow. Call it a to-do list; but, by doing this, you affirm in your mind that you will have at least three wins tomorrow.
