In the last two episode I talked about the short history of Bratislava and Bratislava castle. Today I want to take you back to Bratislava’s coronation times. In the Slovak lesson we’re going to learn more about the past tense of the verb byť - to be (feminine gender). You will learn how to ask “Where were you?” in Slovak, and give a possible answer to it. At the end of this episode, you can find a short story about the coronation days in Slovak.
Slovak lesson
Past tense of the Slovak verb byť - to be in the 1st, the 2nd and the 3rd person singular, feminine gender.
1st person: bola som (I was - feminine gender) or: ja som bola
2nd person: bola si (you were – feminine gender) or: ty si bola
3rd person: bola (she was – feminine gender) or: ona bola
Dialogue:
1. Viera, kde si bola včera? (Viera, where were you yesterday?)
2. Kedy? (When?)
3. Včera poobede. Kde si bola? (Yesterday afternoon. Where were you?)
4. Bola som doma. (I was home.)
5. Nebola si. Tvoja mama ťa nemohla nájsť. (You were not. Your mom could not find you.)
6. Tak som asi bola v záhrade. (So, I was probably in the garden.)
7. Nebola si tam. (You where not there.)
8. Ako to vieš? (How do you know?)
9. Bola som sa tam pozrieť. (I was there to look [for you].)
10. Možno som bola u susedov. (Maybe I was at neighbors.)
11. Nebola si. Tvoja mama bola u susedov a oni povedali, že si tam nebola. (You were not. Your mom was at the neighbors and they said you weren’t there.)
12. Už viem! Bola som vo vani. (I know! I was in a bathtub.)
13. Naozaj? Mama ťa volala, nepočula si ju? (Realy? [Your] Mom was calling you, didn’t you hear her?)
14. Nie, mala som slúchadlá na ušiach. (No, I had headphones on my ears.)
