I remember when I was about 9 or 10 years old, my aunt was rushed to the hospital because she tried to kill herself by cutting her wrist with a blade. That was my first encounter with someone who tried to commit suicide and there were many others after that. My neighbor committed suicide by hanging himself amid rumors his wife was having an affair with another man. My childhood friend tried to end his life by drinking kerosene and fortunately his mother stopped him. Ever since then I have worked on understanding about depression and suicide. As I grow older and faced with many challenges in life I have learnt about depression and suicidal thoughts. I have also learnt that all of us are vulnerable at times and can experience depression, even more so now with social media and the pandemic. Losing a loved one or a family member, losing your job, being sick and quarantined, with all the uncertainties add up for us to being depressed, anxious or even sad or frustrated. This week we will talk about depression, what causes it, its symptoms and some possible ways to overcome it especially now with covid19 pandemic.
