  • Revive, Recycle, Repeat: We talk to Andy Straisfeld about taking medical waste and giving it a new life

In this episode, we talk to Andy Straisfeld, Chief Strategist for LifeCycle Revive. Located in Brantford, Ontario, LifeCycle Revive is Canada's first polypropylene Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) waste recycler, diverting tons of medical waste from landfills. A fantastic start-up idea that has received Canadian Government funding to scale. Some facts about medical waste:

    • About 85% of medical waste is non-hazardous.
    • About 3% of all drug costs come from drug wastage. In the US alone, this translates to over $1 billion a year.
    • In the US, almost 5000 acute hospitals are generating about 7000 tons of waste every day. About $10 billion is spent each year to dispose of it all.

Andy and his team have developed a way to recycle a vast amount of this waste and divert it from landfill.

  • Let's grow a forest: we speak to Pollyanna Darling from Tree Sisters

In this episode, we are delighted to talk to Pollyanna Darling, the Head of Community Engagement & Strategy for TreeSisters.

TreeSisters is a UK registered social change and reforestation charity that places tropical forest restoration into everyone’s hands. Through individuals and businesses that give back to Nature every month, TreeSisters has so far funded the planting of over 15 million trees across 12 locations in Brazil, Borneo, Cameroon, India, Kenya, Mozambique, Madagascar, Nepal and West Papua.

The Vision: To envision a world in which it is normal for everyone to protect and restore themselves and their world.

The Mission: To rapidly accelerate tropical reforestation by inspiring and channelling women's Nature-based feminine leadership into local and global action.

Pollyanna, a vital part of the team, talks about how she got involved, what she is doing and the need for effective change, restoration and reforestation.  She also explains why climate change is going to have a more significant effect on women than men.

We also discuss how we have partnered with them to grow the How To Be Good forest, a challenge that we would love you to join us in.  By becoming a Patreon you help us plant trees and help us continue bringing you these podcasts. With two of the membership levels, we will also plant 3 or 5 trees in your name. We will also give you a mention in one of the shows.

  • Dan Richardson Part 2: Food for Thought, we continue our talk with Dan

    Part 2
From rescuing abandoned dogs in Romania to rehoming a lion cub in South Africa, actor and Born Free Patron Dan Richardson is a compassionate voice for animals everywhere.
Dan has a lifelong love of animals and an unrivalled dedication and commitment to Keep Wildlife in the Wild.

"My position as an actor with a public profile, albeit a relatively small one, affords me the great privilege of being able to get actively and directly involved with more conservation projects than might otherwise be possible," Dan says. "As long as there's cruelty and exploitation being inflicted on animals, I will be motivated to do everything I can to end it."

In July 2018, Dan was a member of the Born Free team who relocated King the lion cub from his temporary home in Belgium to its big cat sanctuary in South Africa.

"King became a bit of a Born Free poster boy because the details of his tragic start in life affected us all so deeply," Dan explains. "The international collaboration that followed in conjunction with Natuurhulpcentrum in Belgium, Kenya Airways, Shamwari Private Game Reserve and others, is exemplary of how Born Free can operate and get the job done in the most complex and challenging circumstances."

Beyond Born Free, Dan is also a Patron of Voice For Asian Elephants Society and Naturewatch Foundation and an Ambassador for the International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals.

Dan: "I know there are a huge number of people who share my passion for the cause. The only difference between them and me is that I'm in the public eye. They are just as much a hero as me or anyone else, and more importantly, without them and their continued efforts, we couldn't do this."

  • Rebel for Life: with Heath Greville from Extinction Rebellion

Our guest today is Extinction rebellion Member Heath Greville.

She is a Public Health Researcher at UWA.
Throughout her career, she was involved in setting up a housing cooperative in the mid-1980s; her first degree was in Chinese and Communications studies, then became a teacher and worked at the Centre for Aboriginal studies for most of the 1990’s in the Aboriginal Community Management and Development program. She worked in public health also and the Mental health Commission.

She lived in China between 2014 and 2017, helping to start up a charity devoted to improving educational opportunities for children in rural villages using music and English language teaching. For 18 months, she lived in the province of Ningxia, which had recently re-located half a million people who were recognised as displaced off their farmlands due to climate change. That area has heated 2.6 degrees C above the pre-industrial average already. This is when the reality of climate change hit her.
Moving back to Perth, WA, she joined Extinction Rebellion to continue her fight against climate change.

To find out more about Extinction Rebellion, follow the link to the main page. You will also be able to find out if there is an extinction rebellion group close to you.
