One of the most under-appreciated ways to build connection and empower your teenager is to handwrite a note. This can be done as a way to heal your relationship after an argument or as a way to communicate how much you love and believe in them.

My wife and I love going to the movies. We especially love movies based on true stories. Last week we went to see a new release. The Boys in the Boat. While the details of the story are entertaining, it is the way this story illustrates the power of connection that I want to share today.

The topic of respect comes up a lot in my work with parents. I hear statements like…
My son doesn’t respect me.
My daughter won’t respect anything I say.
Our children are so disrespectful.
If you identify with these statements, today I am going to offer an insight that will help you to move past the frustration caused by your “disrespectful” children.

I am writing this on January 2, 2024. The start of a new year is typically considered a time for fresh starts. This is when we look back over our life and identify opportunities for growth. We excitedly layout plans for accomplishing personal and professional goals.
Unfortunately, by the first of February many of us will struggle to keep the momentum going. The initial energy burst has faded and our enthusiasm begins to wane. And Just like that old habits creep back in. Six months later we find ourselves in the exact same place we were back on January 1st.
If this is a familiar story, I have an alternative approach for you to put into practice.

I have been reviewing the 5 Love Languages of Children. In the last couple of chapters there is some discussion about discipline and the parent’s role as a teacher of their child. In my work with parents this topic raises a lot of questions.
Today, I am going to share with you a seven step process that I used in those moments where one of our children said something or did something they shouldn’t have done.

Key to your child feeling love is the quality of your connection. Goal of building connection is to have them feel seen for who they are and loved unconditionally.
Five behaviors - Five love languages
It is more than just what you do. What is the context? Are you acting out of fear or love?
Take the connection challenge. Track your engagements as either love base or fear based for a week. See what you learn.
Choosing a loving perspective … changes everything.

All bad or unwanted behavior by your child is a call for love. A call to connect.
One great way to build connection is with quality time.
If you are a busy parent, keep this in mind. It doesn’t have to be additional time. Just be intentional about making better use of the time you are already spending together.

Do you ever feel a lack of purpose in your life or like something is missing?
This past week I was reminded of the pathway to purpose via a great movie.
Over the last week or two I have noticed multiple social media posts related to junior high and high school cross county. This is the time of year where seasons are wrapping up with one big final meet. All of these cross country photos inspire my wife and I to go back and rewatch the movie McFarland USA. This movie is based on the true story of a down and out high school coach that turned a group of hispanic boys into the California state high school cross country champions. If you haven’t seen this movie, I would highly recommend it. It is a story of how one man discovered his purpose in the most unlikely of places.
