How to Choose the Right Support People for You - Finding Friends You Can Count On

Listen Later

Having people in your life you can trust to share your vulnerable stuff with is really important.  But sometimes we jump to trusting people too soon or don't trust at all because we don't know how to know it's safe. Here are 5 tips on how to select the right support person for you.

Show Notes:
It was always hard for me to find people I could trust with all my vulnerable stuff. Growing up, I never told anyone what was really going in my life, I just hid it all & dealt with it on my own. But I don’t believe that is how we should have to live life. We should be able to find the right people to confide in & feel supported by. Even if that means we don’t start until we are adults, like me. At least we made it & can help teach others younger than us.

It’s important to have people we can lean on because we need the people that will lift us up when we don’t think we will make it. We need the people that will give us a quick word of encouragement or some hard truth when times are difficult. We also need the people that won’t let us give up & will help come up with a new plan, a new way to get to where we need to go.

If you’re currently someone’s support person, I wanted to throw out a few great ways you can support someone, in case you needed some fresh ideas:

  1. Take something off their plate
  2. Resist the urge to offer unsolicited advice
  3. Speak highly of them in front of other people/show appreciation
  4. Go with them to experience hard things (if they want it)
  5. Don’t overly talk about yourself & give examples of your own life

And it doesn’t have to be a gaggle of people you need in your life. Even if it’s just one person, that’s great. For me, it’s my husband & my therapist. And this can be friends, family or someone outside these groups. Sometimes I talk with another friend of mine, but only about certain things. Which is okay, too, if you talk with certain people about certain things & not others. It’s all about trust.

But when there isn’t trust, it’s devastating. Sometimes you think you can trust them & it turns out you can’t. Or you fear trusting anyone because you fear it not working out because of past experiences.

This is why I wanted to chat about how to choose the right people to seek support from in your life. This might be people you already know or people you don’t know yet but will become friends with & will have these tips to determine if they can be your support people or not. Here are 5 great tips on How to Choose the Right Support People for You:

  1. Determine the type of person you’d actually enjoy being around
  2. Find someone that demonstrates integrity to you
  3. They also need to be a caring person
  4. Find someone that isn’t negative about everything in their own life
  5. Be patient
