How To Deactivate A DOT Number
Before deactivating or suspending your U.S. DOT number, double-check that you actually don't need it.
You must have a U.S. DOT Number if:
- Your vehicles weigh 10,000 pounds or more (including the combination of vehicles, like a vehicle and trailer)
- Your vehicles transport 8 or more people (including the driver) for profit
- Your vehicles transport 16 or more people (including the driver) not for profit
- You transport hazardous materials (HazMat)
If you no longer need a U.S. DOT Number, you can deactivate it.
Even if your business operates only within state lines (intrastate), you still need to use a DOT number and adhere to the requirements mentioned above. If you have any questions about DOT qualifications, please contact us at (866) 477-0707.
To deactivate your DOT number, follow these steps:
1. File the necessary paperwork with the FMCSA and U.S. DOT to close your DOT number.
2. It's important to deactivate your DOT number, as failure to do so will make you subject to federal mandates and potential penalties for noncompliance.
To file your out-of-business notification:
1. Use this page to update your out-of-business filing.
2. Select the desired quantity (default quantity is 1).
3. Click "Add to Cart".
4. Proceed through Checkout and pay online.
5. A compliance coordinator will contact you to certify your deactivation.
We offer full trucking authority packages to make the launching of your trucking company business go more smoothly. The Department of Transportation regulates safety so doing it right in the begging is very important.
