How To Deal With Weight Gain If You're Grieving The Loss Of A Loved One Many people complain of weight gain weight after the loss of a loved one which also makes them feel unhappy with themselves.  It is a common problem when you are grieving but if you understand why and how it is happening, you will be able to do things which will help. The results from a National Swedish Survey looked at the influences bereavement on weight and found that loss of parents was associated with a 0.45 increase in BMI (SE = 0.20). Yes, some people might also lose weight and lose their appetite. However, if you have gained weight since the loss of a loved one, you are not alone. Comfort eating is common when we are unhappy in life and grief is one of the most challenging things that we ever have to face.  It causes a lot of stress on our bodies and that affects our appetite and sleep. Change in eating patterns and sleep patterns are common in grief. Chronic stress tends to increase the appetite and you might find that you still don't feel like cooking or it takes extra effort to look after yourself - effort that you just may not have much of. So, we get into the bad habit of surviving on snacks or grab-and-go sustenance.  You might also find yourself drinking more coffee to try to increase your energy, trying to get back to work, or cope with family demands.  Chronic stress boosts cortisol, which often increase belly fat - the inflammatory and hormonal fat, which further throws your system out of balance, making you more prone to insulin resistance, diabetes, and more.
