Twenty-five years ago they bought a homestead, in the middle of Vancouver Island, on the water's edge. There are still reflections off the small lake at the foot of Mount Benson - of gardens and vineyards and woodland encounters.
Westwood Lake Chronicles is a dreamscape diary, a backyard inventory of life and death in paradise, and the desperate pressures that threaten its existence.
Lawrence Winkler has written an anthem to living deliberately with nature, and the virtues of simplicity, self-sufficiency, solitude, and silence. Find refuge.
Members Reviews:
In praise on nature
The author, who lives on Vancouver Island and practices medicine there, has written a series of books on the natural scene about his home, which he loves. The reader is taken on treks through the woods and fields with the pet dog. In keeping with his scientific background, the author laces his lyrical account with scientific factoids. Very enjoyable recreational reading
Much more than a dreamscape diary
A delicious, rich, fascinating melange of descriptive natural history, science, lore, and romance by an intellectual who struggles with 'whither Mother Earth?'. Not a gulpable book - should be savored in sips.
An islander's view
Winkler did a great job of describing Westwood Lake and its natural beauty. He describes beautifully his passion for his environment with facts and humor! A thoroughly enjoyable read!
Five Stars
Thanks Doc Wink another great read.
Dream yourself out in nature
Lawrence Winkler describes his lovely home at Westwood Lake. He describes every animal and plant he had met or heard at his time he is living there, in a special way. Now I can imagine how wild and untouched landscape he is living in, which animal you can see and hear there.
This book could be nice if you want to dream yourself out in nature.
Because this book is described in a very detailed way, I have read it in periods.
