Great story for all ages
Beautiful illustrations and a story that took us into the imagination of a young boy! I bought this book for my youngest daughter...but read it aloud to her and my teens. Everyone was transported into the story by the imaginative and poetic writing. The illustrations are fantastic and were enjoyed as much as the story itself. I would highly recommend this book...as a parent it was a real treat to have all my kids, young and not so young, gather around and enjoy a story together!
Poetic and a little dreamlike
Ostensibly a children's book, Ichiro Dreams in Color really shines thanks to its quiet, poetic and almost dreamlike qualities. These are enhanced by the simple yet evocative illustration and the use of big washes of background color, giving the pictures a feeling that is at once both stark and soft, which seems only appropriate for a book that's in part about a young child's conception of war.
Ichiro Dreams in Color
A creative story written in poetic form,Ichiro Dreams in Colorinvites the reader to accompany a boy through his daydreams near the coast and follow his imagination up into the sky. Along the way, the reader is presented with interesting aviation, science and history lessons, which attest to the passion that the author has for his subject matter.
Ichiro is the universal starry eyed little boy, filled with wonder and imagination.
Louis really outdid himself with this delightful children's book. When I read it, the first thought that came to mind was that this is an excellent book to be read out loud during the circle at Story Telling time. This should be required reading in all the elementary schools, and I would wager that it would delight any youngster having this book read to them before bedtime. Cheers, Louis.
Reminds me of my childhood
I really liked the pastoral themes brought up by Ichiro's daydreaming. It reminded me of summer afternoons spent lying in the grass and watching the world go by high above me. It was also interesting how the author allows the reader to view the romantic notion of the Japanese Zero fighters from the point of view of a child. As with anything, WWII's Pacific theater was more than just the Japanese attacking Pearl Harbor and the US retaliating by bombing Japan. There is so much more than has been revealed through print and film over the years and this is another snapshot, rife with childlike innocence. I feel like going to a grassy knoll and lying on the grass and daydream of flying through the clouds and watching the world zoom below.
