Very good writing, bad story

I guess you could classify this as a sort of "coming-of-middle-age" story, but to me it was just pure pathos. The writing was rich without being overly verbose and really created scenes, but the vast majority of the scenes in this book were just devastatingly depressing. When the story wasn't terribly sad, I usually found myself either frustrated by the narrator's negativity or angered by his violent reactions (there is one scene in particular, involving a dog, that almost made me quit the book right then and there).

I guess I was caught off guard because the book came highly recommended by one of my favorite comedy writers, so perhaps I would have a less critical opinion of I'd known what I was getting into beforehand. As, as I've already mentioned, the saving grace of this book is that the writing is top-notch.

Just be forewarned that this book deep and dark and you get only the slightest bit of (ultimately unsatisfying) relief from all the ire at the very end.

I LOVED THIS BOOK !

I am mystified by the previous reviwers charactterization of a "whiny" tone. I found it to be entertaining and thoughtful. The narrator does a marvelous job of conveying the humor and pathos of the story. I hope Mark Milhone continues to write.

A bummer of a road trip

Usually books about road trips are about misadventures and self-discovery. Instead, this book uses a trip to pick-up a used BMW bought on ebay to rehash in flashbacks the narrator's past year of family medical emergencies, the deaths of family members (people and pets), and the falling apart of his marriage. Although the author tries to be humorous, the book sinks under the weight of its whiny tone. If this book were a movie, it would have gone straight to DVD.

This is an easy to read, but well-written inspirational book.

Loved this inspiring book. John Quinones' writing style is superb and very accessible. Nothing about this book did I dislike. I'd recommend it to everyone.

Shouts and Whispers is an excellent book for someone who wants to know more about women, and, in particular, Mexican women. I was amazed at the candid honesty, bravery, and generosity displayed by most of the women in their stories. They truly wear their hearts on their sleeves. Although all of the contributors are of outstanding caliber, I would probably not have included a couple of the authors. Overall, the book is good, and certainly worth reading. The following are my specific responses to some of the writers and stories that impressed me most.

Lourdes Arizpe. In her sophisticated writing, she describes violence - a very sensitive issue- with class and depth. Her narrative depicts violence as viewed and suffered by women. Ms. Arizpe's writing confronts the reader with images of our own crude humanity. She never employs propagandistic tactics to elicit sympathy, but stays true to her own message. I must confess that although I did not know anything about Ms. Arizpe before reading this book, I am now a fan of hers. I think that because Ms. Arizpe is an anthropologist, she is better able to show us human nature in all its complexity. Although I do not want to deny respect to the other authors in this book, I would certainly venture to say that is the deepest and most complex story in the book.

Patricia Reyes Spindola. This story seems to be written for those who doubt that beautiful and successful women may be insecure. Ms. Reyes confesses her insecurities with such candor that you can only admire her all the more after reading her story. To say the least she is very honest!!

Julieta Fierro. My teenage Godson is a fan of hers, and once I read her story, I was able to understand why: she is very sharp!

Elena Poniatowska. After reading her story, I was nearly convinced that one will never be able to find someone with a heart as big as hers.

Maria Amparo Casar. Anyone who has ever felt the pressure to succeed in school will be able to relate to her anxieties and challenges.

Guadalupe Loaeza. As usual, Ms. Loaeza is very funny! I simply cannot understand Mr. GC.- although he seems smart, he screwed it up big time!

Ana María Olabuenaga. Modest and Humble!

Nina Zambrano. Sensitive, very sensitive.

Denise Dresser. For those of you who read her columns, the author here is not simply a brilliant mind; she is a woman made of flesh and bones: generous and brave!

P.S. I definitively support the idea of having this book translated into English.

Powerful autobiography

This book grabbed my attention from the beginning to the end. The woes of a young boy growing up. Between the author and the narrator I found myself constantly holding my sides.

A Delight for Paris Lovers

Anyone who loves Paris and have thought how nice it would be to own an apartment there, whether feasible or not, will love this story.

In a entertaining account of looking for a modest (at Paris prices) apartment, we learn the ropes of finding one. With just enough smattering of French phrases, you learn much about French living, real estate, banking, customs and quirks.

I expected far more from a book about Paris

I was dismayed at the lack of character development and plot. The descriptive prose, which I adore when reading of Paris (or any European city) was lacking.

Travel and golf. What could be better?

This is a fun book. I don't understand the reviews complaining about how he speaks of the nation of India. He is simply giving his perspective on the places he visits. I thought it was amusing and at time hilarious.

I have spent quite a bit of time in South Africa and his descriptions of the razor wire and townships was dead-on. Also, I loved the way he described Table Mountain. It is beautiful.

This isn't my favorite book on golf, but it is definitely worth a credit.
