Publisher's Summary:

Here the third story in McCloskeys thrilling saga of the Alaskan fishermen. Twenty years after his greenhorn days in William McCloskeys bestselling novel, Highliners, Hank Crawford stands tall as a respected fishing captain in Kodiak, Alaska. Set amongst the tumult of the early 1980s, Raiders follows the struggles of the Alaskan fishermen as they regain control of their fishing grounds from the fleets of foreign companies who have been plundering their bays. But such companies arent deterred, and instead they contract American boats to catch the fish for them. In order to keep his family afloat, he swears, Hank signs on with a Japanese firm. Shunned as a traitor by his peers, Hank keeps on fishing. Their disgust and his tainted ethics will all be worth it for the chance to keep on fishing.

But when Hank begins to suspect that his new employers are playing a political game - and using him as the pawn - he must confront the possibility that in order to find redemption, hell have to sacrifice all he has.

In this masterful finale to the Highliners series, McCloskey takes on the all-too-real horrors of the seafaring life: storms that can sink a ship, giant fish that can snap a mans arm. For anyone in love with the Alaskan backdrop, the feel of hauling in fish, or traveling the ever-changing sea, Raiders is a story to read, cherish, and never forget.

Editorial Reviews:

The third in William McCloskeys trilogy of novels featuring the well-beloved Highliners and Breakers, Raiders picks up Hank Crawfords story where those left off. Plunging us into the icy waters off the coast of Kodiak Island, Alaska, Aaron Abanos vigorous performance evokes the life of a commercial fisherman. Veering from raw emotion to visceral detail, Abanos rugged voice evokes McCloskeys story of the death of Hanks best friend, his wifes desire to captain her own ship, and a new contract with the Japanese. This unique and truly believable audiobook is a breathless adventure for any listener.

Publisher's Summary:

Fifteen years after their Princeton graduation, Jay, Franny, Emerson, and Stevie meet at a college reunion. Life has taken each of them in different directions - Jay is a married man with a baby on the way, while Franny yearns for a child. Divorced single mom Emerson is drawn to a man who challenges her assumptions about finding a once-in-a-lifetime love. And Stevie has recently been rocked by a shocking revelation - the answer to a long-kept family secret.

Now the bond between them takes a surprising twist, one that changes how each feels about family and friendship. One thing is certain: They will all find their heart's desires in the last place they imagine - as they discover that family is less about blood ties than the warm embrace of ones who accept them as they are.

Editorial Reviews:

Narrator Gayle Hendrix's arch performance adds sparks to this story about four Princeton graduates reconnecting at their 15-year college reunion. Literary agent Franny is desperate for a child, but her unorthodox solution - using her married friend Jay as a sperm donor - leads to unexpected repercussions. Blue-blooded single mom Emerson finds herself drawn to a socially-unacceptable man, and commitment-phobic Stevie wrestles with her boyfriend's marriage proposal and the discovery of a father she never knew. Hendrix expresses each character with precision, from Franny's blunt single-mindedness to Stevie's difficulty in trusting the men in her life. Listeners will find this entertaining audiobook a quick and easy listen.

Title: Rake

Subtitle: A Novel

Author: Scott Phillips

Narrator: Christian Rummel

Format: Unabridged

Length: 4 hrs and 34 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-11-13

Publisher: Audible Studios

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 6 votes

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

The landscape of contemporary Paris, replete with the best restaurants, the trendiest bars and clubs, is usually filled with the wealthy, the famous, and le rake or le rou, the charming, educated sophisticate with little or no conscience. Into this cushy world bursts Dr. Crandall Taylor - or rather the actor who plays him, the star of a dated American soap opera that is now one of the hottest prime-time shows in France. And this newfound fame, as enriching as it is unexpected, is not wasted on Crandall, eager to put his dark and often violent American past behind him and enjoy all the fruits and the women that Paris and fame have to offer him.

But TV fame isnt enough. Randall wants a feature film. Every actor wants a feature film, and so Crandall uses his charm and intellect to draw into his narcissistic web four different women: an executive at the network that runs his show; an American porn star reaching new heights on the Internet; a bookish university student with a slightly nasty bent; and the beautiful would-be actress wife of an arms dealer. Against his better judgment, Crandall accepts both the arms dealers cash and his beautiful wifes advances. Soon, Crandall is on the run through the alleys and streets of Paris, trying not only to fund a film but simply to stay alive. But this is no ordinary chase and Crandall is no ordinary mouse and soon his penchant for violence, sex, and megalomania erupts into full-blown war.

Rake is the latest noir classic from the author of The Ice Harvest. It features a charming, despicable antihero and a funny, satiric take on modern entertainment culture. Phillips turns his gimlet eye on the lush life of an actor who, on his destructive tour through Paris, crosses the line from garden variety narcissism into full-fledged psycopathy.

Title: Sniper

Format: Unabridged

Length: 10 hrs and 13 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-04-13

Publisher: Audible Studios

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes

Genres: Fiction, Contemporary

Publisher's Summary:

Poised to stand among the great war novels, the harrowing chronicle of a sniper during the Chechen War.The saboteurs? Holy Christ, what happened? What did you do to deserve that? a fellow soldier responds when he hears that Nicolai Lilin has been assigned to an unconventional, ultra-high-risk paramilitary unit of the Russian army. Also nicknamed the para-bats for the black parachutes that dropped them behind enemy lines at night, Lilin and his fellow saboteurs soon find themselves fighting Islamic insurgents armed with American weaponry in the breakaway province of Chechnya.

In vivid, harrowing detail, Lilin relays how, under the mind-bending dangers of heavy fire, on unknown terrain, in unpredictable small villages, the only goal is survival. Under the leadership of corrupt generals profiting from the war, his unit develops a camaraderie that is their best hope for staying aliveand staying human.

Ultimately, the return to the bland normality of an impersonal society at peace might be the hardest struggle of all.Writing with unhindered directness and power, Lilin combines his own experiences as a sniper in Chechnya together with the stories of those he fought beside to forge an autobiographical novel unique in the literature of war. A bestseller in Europe, this novel will remain an unforgettable account of one of the ugliest conflicts of our time.
