A fun book!

A delightful variation on an old folktale! Koppel is a junk dealer who finds an old meat grinder that offers to grant him three wishes. As in Paul Galdone's The Three Wishes, Koppel brings home his find to a skeptical wife, and ends up with a long piece of kishka (sausage) attached to his nose. This engaging story is rooted in Jewish humor and Yiddish jargon and is wonderfully enhanced by the clear, bright illustrations of Sheldon Cohen. Aubrey Davis is a unique and appealing storyteller, definitely worth a read!

This is an interesting tale inspired by a Biblical proverb. The best leaders seek knowledge while the worst assume they already have all they need. This makes for a nice little fable, but the violence and death may be difficult for young children. Overall, a quick and interesting read well worth the small price.

This is the first thing I've read by TJE Lemke and I have to say, it will certainly not be the last. This story, which reminded me of a classic Grimm fairytale, had me captured with the very first line to the very last. It was very well done and I'm excited to see more by this author.

A Good Fable

The story read like a fable or fairy tale. I finished it quickly and I'll probably read it again. Definitely gonna follow this author.

This is a fun look at hair traits for the young student in the "What Traits are in Your Genes?" series.

Nobody is exactly like the next person, but we all have certain things in common such as arms and legs. There are ways that we do differ from others. Some of these differences "are called traits." Skin color, dimples, freckles, and eye color are a few examples of traits. Genes give our bodies the "directions for different traits." We don't just have a few genes, but have thousands of them. You have two pairs of genes that are given to you from your birth parents. If you take a look around you, you will see that you have much more in common with people than with animals.

One trait that you can easily take a look at is hair color. Your genes "give directions" for the colors we have when they tell the body which pigment to give us and how much to use. If you look at the pictures in this book you'll see a dark-haired boy and a light-haired girl. His hair has alleles for a lot of pigment, while she "has alleles for light hair." Alleles are two or more forms of a gene. You'll learn about pigments, where red hair comes from, hair texture (curly, wavy, straight), uncommon traits such as a forelock, you'll get to see pictures of a widow's peak, and will learn many more interesting things about hair traits.

This is a fun look at hair traits for the young student in the "What Traits are in Your Genes?" series. As a beginning nonfiction book it is geared toward the newly independent reader. There are four basic "chapters" and the text is large and easy to read. The layout is bright, contains full-color photographs with informative captions that provide additional factual material or asks the student to think about what he or she sees. For example, one says that "A gene comes in two different forms, called alleles. This boy has alleles for dark hair." In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, an activity (Track the Traits), and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. This is an excellent overview of how marine animals make adaptations in order to live in the ocean!

When we look out at the waves as they come onto the sandy beaches, we cannot easily see that it is a habitat "where plants and animals live." Beneath the waves we can see many different kinds of fish, coral, and other plant life. Many of these creatures have "special adaptations" so they can live in the ocean. For example, fish have fins that help them swim and they have gills so they can "breathe underwater." As we watch a lobster, we can easily see that his claws help him to "grab fish."

Octopuses are able to change color and that helps them to hide from their enemies. They can blend right in with the ocean floor and can't be seen. The giant whales have "blowholes on top of their heads" so they can breathe. Other creatures, such as certain kinds of sea horses "look like seaweed" so they can also hide from their enemies. If you take a look at the picture of the shark in this book, you can easily see that he has "lots of sharp teeth for eating fish."

This is an excellent overview of how marine animals make adaptations in order to live in the ocean. This book is an easy way to introduce the emergent reader to nonfiction. On each page there is photograph accompanied by a simple sentence. There is an occasional word, highlighted in bold dark print, that is more difficult. For example, the word "blowholes," is highlighted and explained in the glossary. I liked the bold, bright, and exciting photographs that young children will enjoy. In the back of the book is a diagram of a penguin and its adaptations, a paragraph discussing them, a section of "Fun Facts," an index, and a glossary. This is one in a series of "Animal Adaptations," a series you may wish to consider for your natural science unit in a homeschool or classroom setting.
