    Title: Willard Manor
    Author: Linda Loegel
    Narrator: Beverly Ann Astley
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 40 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-03-16
    Publisher: Linda P. Loegel
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
Willard Manor is the story of a fictional house built in 1840 and the Willard family, who called it home for 170 years. A young couple, Shelley and Tony Maguire, buy the vacant, rundown house and begin to renovate it. During the renovation process, the little treasures they find within its walls help them piece together the history of the house and its former occupants, from the Civil War to Woodstock and beyond. The Willards' legacy of love, laughter, pain, and joy echo down through the years with each new find. Willard Manor is home to one family, one faith, many generations.
    Members Reviews:
The writing was excellent and the main characters quite engagingly portrayed
Overall, this was an enjoyable book. My primary reason for giving 4* was the somewhat contrived nature of the story. A young couple buy a house, built in 1840, and lived in by successive generations until 2010. In renovating it, they find mementos with just enough information to tantalize them into wondering about what actually happened years ago. At each discovery, the narration transitions to the relevant time in the familyâs history, and in a chronological progression so that the reader becomes acquainted with the principal members in each generation. The writing was excellent and the main characters quite engagingly portrayed, though always in relation to a particular aspect of the historical time in question; e.g., the arrival of a new appliance, or an early model-T car, as well as births, marriages and deaths. The descriptions of life in the 1800s in particular are quite authentic and one certainly gets a strong sense of daily life at that particular time
    New twist on America's History!
Willard Manor, a fictional house in Connecticut, was built in the 1800s by an English immigrant. Linda Loegel weaves a poignant story using 'The Manor' as a focal point as a twenty-first century couple purchase the house from an heir of the Willard family and find artifacts that help reveal the family's story from the mid-1800s through present day. I loved the way Loegel follows the family through significant events and inventions of American history. In fact, it made me wish that I had taken the time to learn more about my own family history. If you enjoy historical fiction, you won't want to miss WILLARD MANOR by Linda Loegel.

A WHOLESOME BOOK THAT KEEPS YOUR ATTENTION
This was a great book to read and kept my interest throughout the entire story. It starts out quietly and simply, but picks up speed as you are introduced to a number of characters as new owners. It is a wholesome book and feeds your soul in a positive manner. This book leaves you wanting even more stories about Willard Manor.
    Lovely story!
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It was a real delight to finally finish a good book for a change. I loved how the story developed between past history and the present. And the characters were so real to me. I highly recommend this book!
Willard Manor is a real page turner
Willard Manor by Linda Loegel was a great find! The compelling story gives us a glimpse of a young man and his bride in the 1840âs filled with the same dreams and ambitions that fill the hearts of young couples today. The author shares the joys, trials and tribulations the original family John and Mary Willard and the impact they have on lives of the newest owners, Tony and Shelley.

    Title: McConkey
    Subtitle: A Political Novel
    Author: John J. McConkey
    Narrator: Joseph B. Kearns
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 42 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-29-16
    Publisher: John J. McConkey
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1951, at the age of six, John McConkey meets his great-uncle Jack, whose stories about his own life fascinate the boy's imagination. As John comes of age in the 60's and 70's, Uncle Jack's socialist, working-class views challenge John's understanding of power, politics, and the "official" versions of history.
A fascinating glimpse into more than a century's worth of landmark political events, including the 1892 Homestead Strike, the Spanish-American War, the Ludlow Massacre, the Red Scare, the New Deal, the Cold War, JFK's assassination, 9/11, and the ins and outs of modern corruption, McConkey leads the listener to think beyond the status quo - and to question the stories we have been taught.
As John progresses from wide-eyed little boy to acerbic old man, his journey provides glimpses into our own modern world in this quirky and compelling novel.
    Members Reviews:
When you were young, how did you receive your political education?
    Book Review: McConkey
When you were young, how did you receive your political education? Did your parents whisper, âKeep your mouth shut and your head down. Donât rock the boat.â Or did they insist, âLook deeper. Thereâs more to this than meets the eye.â
Well, McConkey is all about looking deeper, looking below the surface, which is the only real way to examine American history. It is also about connecting your personal life with the American story â that is, what were your relatives doing during the major events that shaped (and misshaped) our countryâs history?
Itâs significant that the author seems to be a Baby Boomer. We Boomers spent our childhood in the fifties and early sixties in a dreadful silence, a time when nobody talked about anything of social significance â race, class, gender, religion, politics. We lived only a few short years from the Holocaust, but that topic was taboo. We lived at the dawn of the nuclear age, but hardly anybody ever talked about the Bomb.
Itâs appropriate that the narrator grew up in Philadelphia, a city full of history and the birthplace of our government.
And itâs only fair that a Boomer should speak out now, in order to pass on what he has learned to Millenials and their children. The first lesson is simple: Turn off your TV. Yes, we who lived at the birth of television know far better than anyone that there is no truth to be found there. Instead, says McConkey, you have to discover the truth on your own. Quoting the lyrics of the song âMaster Jackâ by Four Jacks and a Jill at the beginning of the book, the author warns the reader,
You taught me all the things the way youâd like them to be,
But Iâd like to see if other people agree.
Itâs all very interesting the way you disguise,
But Iâd like to see the world through my own eyes.
The story opens as the narrator, a boy of six, meets his Uncle Jack. Because the man is a truth-teller, he is labeled a liar. Because he was born in 1880, heâs got history to tell â that is, retell. And because he loves the boy, he shapes the boyâs political education.
This book makes a great gift. Men will like it because the author and main characters are men. Women will like it because itâs written from a very personal point of view.

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of The World Before Us by Aislinn Hunter, read by Fiona Hardingham.
Jane was 15 when her life changed forever. In the woods surrounding a Yorkshire country house, she took her eyes off the little girl she was minding, and the girl slipped into the trees - never to be seen again.
Now an adult, Jane is obsessed with another disappearance: that of a young woman who walked out of a Victorian lunatic asylum one day in 1877. As Jane pieces together moments in history, forgotten stories emerge - of sibling jealousy, illicit affairs and tragic death....
    Critic Reviews:
"A tantalising mystery...beguiling and richly suggestive." (Metro)
"Strange and absorbing.... I relished this book." (Penelope Lively, The New York Times Book Review)
"Sensitive, melancholy, sharply observant. A work of great power." (Guardian)
"Ambitious, inticate...cleverly innovates while tipping a nod to classic Gothic tropes: dynastic rivalries, crumbling country houses, madhouses and vanished girls." [National Post (Canada)]
"A brilliant work of humanity and imagination, artful and breathtakingly beautiful. It will continue to haunt long after you have finished reading." (Helen Humphreys, author of Nocturne)
"Powerful, thought-provoking, haunting and haunted.... Reminiscent of A. S. Byatt's Possession, it forces you to look at the world - the people around you, the objects they hold dear - in a different light." [Globe and Mail (Canada)]
    Members Reviews:
    Brilliant though incomplete
I have to give this book five stars because I loved it and that's the basis of Amazon reviews. I really enjoyed reading every page and looked forward to coming back to the book after a break. The device of the voices of the ghosts was particularly effective in reinforcing the tenuous link between past and future.
From a critical point of view though there are some problems. The book just feels incomplete. There are simply too many things unresolved at the end. The central McGuffin - what happened to N- - is solved, but in the end that was not the interesting problem. The authorial end note indicates how this may have come to be the case but one is left at the end wanting more resolution. Not everything needs to be resolved, especially given the nature of this novel, but certainly more than is.
"The in-between we think of as `now.' "
We begin with the disappearance of Lily, a five-year-old girl who while out on a hike vanishes from her sitter, Jane Standen, who is 15 and who is minding her while Lily's father has gone ahead on their excursion. Warning: that is never resolved. (There they go! Headin' fer the exits.)
Ah, but for those who remain I shall elaborate a bit.Jane, now 34, is losing her job at a small London museum closing for lack of funds; she commits a compulsive act at the closing lecture, and without telling those who care about her flees back to the town where Lily disappears. Hunkering down in an inn, she returns to a research project she's long worked on, in which she attempts to reconstruct another disappearance--that of young woman known only as "N." N had disappeared from an insane asylum in the 1870s, accompanying two of the inmates who have forayed off the grounds.
