a childhood favorite... just as good as I remembered it :)
It's so fantastic that you have the German language edition
This book was just as exciting as when I read it as a thirteen year old. It was the book that got me hooked on reading as many Karl May books as I could get my hands on. It's so fantastic that you have the German language edition. Thank you amazon.
Reliving my boyhood
I read Winnetou as a young boy when I grew up in Germany. My friends and I always exchanged new volumes written by Karl May. So we knew most of his writings. I think he wrote over 80 different volumes, not all of them about American Indians. Winnetou, the story of the Apache chief, was by far my favorite. When I saw those volumes, unfortunately not all of them, appear on Kindle for free, I downloaded quite a few of them. So far I have only read Winnetou, and while doing so I was reliving some moments of my boyhood. I would probably not like Karl May's style today. It is convoluted and rather old-fashioned. However, Karl May wrote about the native Americans in such a nice way that a delegation of American Indians visited him in Radebäul, Germany, to thank him for his efforts and to bring him several old American Indian artefacts. There is now a museum in Karl May's hometown. As far as I know, Karl May himself never left his homeland of Germany.
Nice to read
It helped me to return to my childchood behind the Iron Curtain and dreams of mysterious Indians. It really didn't matter there were some factual mistakes - I sea them now, Indians talked in German and Germans were glorified. Just for a moment hands of a clock were put back. Nice reading..
