    Title: The Story of Forgetting
    Subtitle: A Novel
    Author: Stefan Merrill Block
    Narrator: Patrick Lawlor
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-03-08
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 7 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Hundreds of miles to the south, in Austin, Seth Waller is a teenage "Master of Nothingness" - a prime specimen of that gangly, pimple-rashed, too-smart breed of adolescent that vanishes in a puff of sarcasm at the slightest threat of human contact.
When his mother is diagnosed with a rare form of early-onset Alzheimer's, Seth sets out on a quest to find her lost relatives and to conduct an "empirical investigation" that will uncover the truth of her genetic history.
Though neither knows of the other's existence, Abel and Seth are linked by a dual legacy: the disease that destroys the memories of those they love, and the story of Isidora - an edenic fantasy world free from the sorrows of remembrance, a land without memory where nothing is ever possessed, so nothing can be lost.
Through the fusion of myth, science, and storytelling, this novel offers a dazzling illumination of the hard-learned truth that only through the loss of what we consider precious can we understand the value of what remains.

    Un-listenable
I see that this reader has 90 some readings to his credit. I am at a loss as to how. Who decided that a bit of gravel in the voice is appealing to listeners? Add to it the inability to convey any expression except to sort of screech and you have the only book that I really feel like asking for my money back. A shame because what I managed to listen to suggests the author has the ability to turn a phrase.

    Language: English

    Publisher's Summary:
The Last Time They Met moves backwards to explore Linda's life years earlier, at age 26, when an affair with Thomas shattered her life, and at age 17, when they first met.
In this mesmerizing novel, Anita Shreve, author of the international best seller The Pilot's Wife, examines the resilience of emotion and the extraordinary repercussions a single choice, even a single word, can have over a lifetime.
    Critic Reviews:
"Her fluid narrative perfectly mirrors her protagonists' evolving temperaments and viewpoints, while her overall restraint serves to intensify the novel's devastating conclusion." (Publishers Weekly)

    Author Scammed the Readers/Listeners
I am a fan of Anita Shreve, especially Pilot's Wife and Fortune's Rock. So it was with anticipation that I invested a good deal of time and emotional energy getting caught up in the lives of the characters in this book. However, I felt "sucker-punched" by the unexpected ending of this book. I am actually so angry at the author for using such a cheap, trite literary trick at the end--one which I feel showed little regard for her audience-- that I am boycotting any future novels by Shreve. If you don't want to feel insulted and cheated out of a credit or $, skip this book.
    Very Interesting
I loved this book but it was a little hard to follow at first. The book starts in the future and works it way back in time revealing key pieces of information as it progresses. After you have listened to it the first time, you will want to go back listen again to connect all the subtle clues. I highly recommend it.
    love story to remember
Cleverly crafted story about true love and many "what ifs". A love story that you will remember despite - or because of! - its stunning end.
The abridging was well done, no obvious gaps and the narration was excellent.
    I wanted more!
The story was captivating and I loved how they had a history. I hated the end. Blaire Brown is a fantastic narrator and I love how she changed her voice depending on who was talking.
    SKIP THIS
THE most boring book I've ever tried to listen to...don't bother with it.

    Language: English
    Release date: 07-19-07
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 46 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Life in Glory, Wyoming, population 51, isn't exactly exciting. The dusty old town isn't even on the map. And for rancher Luke McCallister, that's just fine. Broken by tragedy, the stoic cowboy spends his time at his 10 Bar Ranch or down at Ima Jane's Rimrock Bar, trying to avoid the gossip being served along with the food and drink. But the everyday quiet of his life is shattered when he finds a human skull - and possibly the key to Glory's oldest mystery.
It was 100 years ago that a band of outlaws were said to have buried their gold in Glory. The one surviving bandit took the secret of the treasure's hiding place with him to the gallows. Angie Sommers knows the story cold: that man was her great-great-grandfather. She's come to Glory to see if the old legend of the gold is true, and she wants Luke to help her find it. She even has a possible clue written by the dead man himself.
Luke has no interest in chasing after pipe dreams. He's seen the damage too much hope can bring. Still, he can't deny that Angie makes him feel things he hasn't allowed himself to feel in years. Something about her sweet, trusting nature, her honest eyes, and unshakable belief makes him feel alive again - and that could be dangerous. For someone else is determined to stop Angie, someone who would do anything for the outlaws' gold. Now, bound by the thinnest of ties and shadowed by danger, Luke and Angie set off in search of a mystery as romantic as the West itself on a journey of faith that will take them into Wyoming's rugged, treacherous terrain and even deeper into the heart's tender graces.

The Legend of Glory, True or False?
Great read! This is my kind of book. Daily gives you a reason to want to know more from the first few pages on through to the last few pages of the book where there is still yet another twist. This is my first Daily book but now I know to put her on my to read list of authors. I loved the way she painted a picture of Glory and Luke's ranch so well that I had the entire area pictured in my mind. The only complaints I could give on this book would be that I want to know what the future of Luke and Angie is and what they all do after the Legend is found to be true.

    One of the best!!
I read every book that Jane Green publishes and this was one of my favorites!! What a great one to get lost in!!
    Consistently Intruiging
Jane Green always develops the characters so well. I expected this book to be more dreary, but it was lovely. A lot more occurs within the story than you anticipate. Good listen.
    Great
    I completely enjoyed this book.
    So great!
Listened to this book to and from work and found myself sitting in my cat until the chapter was over. Loved the story line once I got a hold of all the characters. Sometimes with audibles if there are many characters it takes me a minute to remember who is who.
I found myself laughing and crying with the characters, Jane Green never disappoints.
    Moves too slow
Despite the fact that I usually really enjoy Jane Green's novels, I couldn't get into this one. As usual with her fiction, the pace is slow and more character-driven -- but these characters didn't appeal to me at all, and the only one I felt some interest in was the one who died at the start of the novel.

This brilliant debut is a scathingly hilarious send-up of celebrity, sexual politics, corporate America, and the fleeting status that comes with getting to the table first before the other guy has you for lunch.
    Critic Reviews:
    "Seductively hip....Wickedly funny." (USA Today)
"Barry's delightful first novel delivers a charming and hilarious send-up of the wicked world of marketing....This terrific comic novel is certain to provoke as many belly laughs in print as it might one day on screen." (Booklist)
"A deft, satirical indictment of an industry that makes its living pushing satire, Syrup is understandably deep in hip meta references. What distinguishes the novel from, say, a Thomas Frank-style critique is that it never gets mushy, even after Scat lands the girl." (SPIN)
    Members Reviews:
    Perfect Satire
Maxx Barry is a master of satire. Company is one of my favorite books of light reading so I was ecstatic to find another Barry book on Audible.
I'm a Credit snob and I always feel like I'm getting ripped off if the book is under 18 hours. This book is a classic case of quality over quantity. I found myself alone in the car laughing out loud on multiple occasions.
With simple efficient writing and uncomplicate characters that don't need a lot of development, Barry gets to spend the entire book making fun of big business and (in this case) marketing. With that said, I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and could relate to them as being the extreme's of people I have met before.
If you are looking for some deep thought provoking literature, this isn't it. If you just got done reading Ayn Rand and need a brain break, this is 5 star perfect.
    Light Reading
This was a very fun and light read. Not many twists and turns but still very funny satire. The book presents an interesting and accurate perspective of corporate america and especially the male dominated marketing world. Scott Brick adds to the quality of the writing with his outstanding narrator skills.
Things Don't Necessarily Go Better At Coke
This is the third book by Max Barry that I've read (the prior two in print), and as a former participant in the corporate work force as both employee and executive, I have enjoyed his biting satires of that world. Jennifer Government imagines a world in which corporations operate with minimal governmental regulation and go so far as killing people as part of their marketing campaigns. Company imagines a corporation in which employees don't actually know what their company produces, and what happens when one of them tries to find out.
Syrup, Barry's first novel, examines marketing techniques and internal corporate politics set inside the Coco-Cola Company. Like its successors, it starts with a smart but naive young man just trying to do his job and get ahead, a strong and sexy woman who has the power to make his personal and professional dreams come true, a cold-blooded nemesis who lies and cheats his way to the top, and a spectrum of corporate drones, mindless media types, inept executives, and hip outsiders.
All three books had the same effect on me: I loved their initial premise, liked the characters, bought into the parody for the most part, but ultimately felt that the satire, following a vicious course of logic, strayed a little too far into surrealism.

    Critic Reviews:
"A first-rate cliffhanger." (The New York Times Book Review)
    "Sharp and memorable....Finely wrought." (Newsday)
"As taut and chilling as anything Hitchcock put on film." (San Francisco Chronicle)
    Members Reviews:
    Beautifully written
Would you try another book from Jane Smiley and/or Ruth Ann Phimister?
Yes I would, I have read A Thousand Acres and I loved it.
How could the performance have been better?
It took a while to get over the overly childish voice and narration of Ruth Ann Phimister.
    Any additional comments?
Jane Smiley's talent to describe people and places made the book and the simple plot of it very enjoyable.
    Neither fish nor fowl
I love Jane Smiley, but I don't love this book. Jane tries to combine family dynamics with a murder mystery and she doesn't succeed here. Characters are developed, but don't seem to evolve. And, the mystery drags on and on and on.
    Very disappointing
I was excited to see this book on Audible because I have heard much praise for Jane Smiley's writing. However, I was very disappointed in this novel. The main character of Alice Ellis's naivete bordered on imbecility, which often made the character and her actions, or lack thereof, unbelieveable. The long psychological descriptions, which often changed Alice's mental state from paragraph to paragraph, were also frustrating as this fluctuation of character made it hard to care about what happened to her.
    Weakest Smiley Ive Heard/Read
This was the weakest of several Jane Smiley works Ive read. A limp attempt at a murder mystery. Centered on a cast of self-interested characters you wont care about, the story is formulaic and rife with cliches. The reader is ok, except for one or two poorbut blessedly briefattempts at accents (a Rastafarian, for example). I couldnt wait for this one to end, so when I fell asleep in the middle and awoke to hear the reveal, that was quite enough and I deleted it from my library.
    Psychologically Intriguing Page-Turner
I had modest expectations for this book that were much more than met. The characters were well developed and original. The book had more depth than your average mystery and still kept me turning pages. Surprising! Well crafted!

Good but not Jodi's usual standard
The story is lacking compared to most of her books. The narration as always is excellent. after listening to the story all of Jodi's books are added to my sleep list as the narration voice is great for drifting off to sleep too. Still my fave author for audio books.
    Wow what a story....LOVED IT
Best ever story I have read by Jodie, it had me gripped I couldn't put it down, you so wanted it to be true. I hope I get a chance to read a storyline like this....so moving keeping you on your toes...GREAT STORY
    The Pact review
A compelling listen! So easy I the ear - really enjoyed it! Looking forward to Jodi's next novel!
    Boring - Boring - Boring!!!!
Would you try another book written by Jodi Picoult or narrated by Megan Dodds?
I have always enjoyed Jodi Picoult books, but this is just dull, very little story line and the one that is there is just not believable. Megan Dodds narration only seems to make it even more boring. Give it a miss and Jodi you need a wakeup call!!!!
Has The Pact put you off other books in this genre?
No as I have read and enjoyed Jodi's books before.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She made a very uninteresting story line even more boring.
You didnt love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    NO
    Any additional comments?
I had the feeling that Jodi was writing for the sake of writing, It didn't feel like her heart was in this one. I have over 500 books from Audible and this one is on my top 5 most forgettable and wish I hadn't wasted my time list.
I cried listening to the book!
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes this book was good but I felt it finished to quickly
What other book might you compare The Pact to, and why?
this book could be compared to any Jodi Picoult book
Was The Pact worth the listening time?
Yes definately - but it seemed to finish all of a sudden without a proper ending

    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
It is 1972 when circumstance carries Ellen Grier and her family back to Holly's Field, Wisconsin. Dutifully accompanying her newly unemployed husband, Ellen brings her two children to Vinegar Hill, the home of her in-laws. It's a loveless house suffused with the settling dust of bitterness and routine. Calculated cruelty is a way of life there, preserved and perpetuated in the service of a rigid, exacting and angry God.
Behind a facade of false piety, there are sins and secrets in this place that could crush a vibrant young woman's passionate spirit. Ellen must find the strength to endure, change, and grow in the all-pervading darkness that threatens to destroy everything she is and everyone she loves.
    Editorial Reviews:
Set in a small town in Wisconsin, Ansay's debut novel reveals one woman's desperation to free herself from stifling, narrow-minded expectations. Ellen Grier lives with her rigid in-laws. Her resignation resounds as she acts the role of married "lady" in a devoutly Catholic home. Mother-in-law Mary-Margaret is cranky and cruel, portrayed by Monk in a relentless snarl. The other females are equally believable. Monk's male voices, however, are less strong as they are unevenly attempted, but the triumphant struggle for Ellen's spirit is not diminished.
    Members Reviews:
    Slow.... Sad... Slow...
I really struggled to finish this book, it was only the narrator who made it bearable, she did what she could. I don't think I would have bothered to keep turning pages, the fact that some e was reading it to me, made it more likely for me to finish. I wish i had known that it was endorsed by Oprah before starting, a sad story about a Co dependent middle aged woman. We didn't even get the mild satisfaction of actually seeing the protagonist do anything about her situation, just resolve to do so. She probably didn't. I will give it to the author, she certainly created atmosphere, I was perfectly depressed when I was done.
