From the beloved and best-selling Anna Jacobs comes the second audiobook in her new Lancashire-based saga.

Lancashire, 1931. When Finn Carlisle loses his wife and unborn child, he spends a few years travelling to keep the sad memories at bay. Just as he's ready to settle down again, his great-uncle dies and leaves everything to him. This includes Heythorpe House in Ellindale, just down the road from Leah Willcox and her little fizzy drink factory.

Finn finds a village of people in dire need of jobs, a house that hasn't been cleaned or lived in for 30 years and Reggie, an 11-year-old who's run away from the nearby orphanage and its brutal Director Buddle. When Finn sees the marks left by regular beatings, he decides Reggie will never go back there.

He can't turn away two hungry young women from the village seeking jobs as maids, either, and they, too, need help with their lives. But Buddle has other plans for the child and will stop at nothing to get Reggie back in his cruel grasp. His new neighbours help him save Reggie, but other surprises throw his new plans into turmoil.

Title: The Secret Mandarin

Author: Sara Sheridan

Narrator: Ana Clements

Format: Unabridged

Length: 12 hrs and 39 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-23-17

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

A disgraced woman. A faraway land. A forbidden love...

An unforgettable tale set in Victorian London and 1840s China from a shining, young historical talent.

Desperate to shield her from scandal, Mary's brother-in-law, the ambitious botanist Robert Fortune, forces her to accompany him on a mission to China to steal tea plants for the East India Company. But Robert conceals his secret motives - to spy for the British forces, newly victorious in the recent Opium War.

His task is both difficult and dangerous - the British are still regarded as enemies by the Chinese, and exporting tea bushes carries the death sentence. In these harsh conditions, Mary grieves for her London life and the baby she has been forced to leave behind while her fury at Robert intensifies.

As their quest becomes increasingly treacherous, Robert and Mary disguise themselves as a mandarin and manservant. Thousands of miles from everything familiar, Mary revels in her new freedom and the Chinese way of life - and, when danger strikes, finds unexpected reserves of courage.

The Secret Mandarin is an unforgettable story of love, fortitude and recklessness - of a strong woman determined to make it in a man's world and a man who will stop at nothing to fulfil his desires.

Not a good Book

I did not like the characters in this book Robert (Mary's brother-in-law) was a bully. He only thought about himself and his

plants. Mary lacked any kind of inter strength or at times, intelligence. I was not impressed with this book at all. Story

line was ok and it could have been a great book but the lack of a good story line and characters made the book dull and

very boring. I ended up skipping about 5 chapters just to finish the book.

Good reading, will look for more from this Author

A Surprising Journey Into the Past

I didn't buy The Secret Mandarin from Amazon; I picked it up on a discount table at a local newsagent. It is worth much more than it cost.

It is set in the 1800's and although it begins in England most of the tale takes place in a hostile China. This is a work of fiction based on a real life character, a botanist no less, but you don't need an interest in botany to be carried away on this adventure.

The story is written in the first person and although our narrator is touted to be a carefree and adventurous woman, the voice is conservative. This is a small criticism and is outweighed by a strong and authentic story line, the author clearly having done her research.

If you read to escape the every day and want to be transported to another time and place, this book will do it for you.

"Factional" account of plant hunting in China

It's loosely based on the story of Robert Fortune, but it's also a lot of fun and interesting. If you don't get too worried about the fictional elements that make this a very accessible book, than the backdrop of the plant-hunting expedition is quite engaging.

Publisher's Summary:

Up the remote James River lies a small fort. This first outpost of the new colony is besieged by natives, beset by danger and sabotaged from within. Christian Hardy is there to protect the new possession on behalf of young Prince Henry, heir to the English throne.

Ranged against him are King James I and his spymaster Robert Cecil as well as his old adversary Realm, who will stop at nothing to wreak vengeance on Hardy. A desperate fight for survival begins....

Critic Reviews:

"This is history - and terrific history - on every page." (Frederick Forsyth on Blood Rock)

"Epic adventure stuff." (Bookseller on Blood Rock)

Brilliant!

"Cradle" by James Jackson is a thrilling and compelling historical fiction novel set in the early 1600's that I really enjoyed and found very interesting.

The author has created a brilliant story and brought to life a very vibrant and turbulent time in history when the first permanent British settlers colonised in the Americas. One hundred English settlers in 1607, deposited from three ships, erected a rudimentary wood fort in the wilds of Virginia and named it Jamestown. So began the battle for America....

The frontier setting of the story is fabulously described and truly sets the scene.

I loved the opening chapter, it truly drew me in... "The priests danced and death was close. It was the worst of times to be a prisoner of the natives......" Often quite brutal and violent, this story truly reflects how barbaric the native Indians were and understandably passionate about defending and protecting their land.

I did find the timeline jumped a little and that's the only criticism I would have about the writing style. The narrative is superbly written with some mighty strong characters including Captain John Smith, Realm and Christian Hardy.

James Jackson is well up there in the ranks of historical fiction writers who I believe is also a Sunday Times bestseller. I'd happily read more by him in the future and I may even look up some of his previous successful novels.

Great read

I received a free electronic copy of this historical based on fact novel from Netgalley, James Jackson, and Bonnier Zaffre in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all, for sharing your hard work with me.

The colonization of Jamestown, Virginia in May 1607 was due to the efforts of Prince Henry, son of England's King James, and a conglomeration of English investors known as the Virginia Company of London. King James openly opposed this effort of colonization fearing it would cause another war with Spain, who already had colonies on the southeastern coast of America. the Establishment of Jamestown occurred about 20 years after the discovery that the Lost Colony, Queen Elizabeth I and Sir Walter Raleigh's effort to establish an outpost on Roanoke Island, North Carolina had completely disappeared. (See Wikipedia "The Croatoan Project" for archeological information on this band of settlers uncovered by Hurricane Emily in 1993).

Cradle follows true the problems of the Jamestown settlers as written up by historians at the time. Problems with weather, misunderstandings with the native population and the 'lost' third mission of supply ships were exasperated by infighting in England between the factions of King James and the Virginia Company of London representatives.
