Capo Verde, 1674.

Title: The Faithful

Author: Juliet West

Narrator: Grace Andrews

Format: Unabridged

Length: 10 hrs and 2 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-15-17

Publisher: Macmillan Digital Audio

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

As Britain is pulled towards war, the secrets within two families threaten to tear them apart, in the new novel from Juliet West, The Faithful....

July 1935. In the village of Aldwick on the Sussex coast, 16-year-old Hazel faces a long, dull summer with just her self-centred mother, Francine, for company. But then Francine decamps to London with her lover, Charles; Oswald Mosley's blackshirts arrive in Aldwick; and Hazel's summer suddenly becomes more interesting. She finds herself befriended by two very different people: Lucia, an upper-class blackshirt, passionate about the cause; and Tom, a young working-class boy, increasingly scornful of Mosley's rhetoric. In the end, though, it is Tom who wins Hazel's heart - and Hazel who breaks his.

Autumn 1936. Now living in London, Hazel has grown up fast over the past year. But an encounter with Tom sends her into freefall. He must never know why she cut off all contact last summer, betraying the promises they'd made. Yet Hazel isn't the only one with secrets. Nor is she the only one with reason to keep the two of them apart....

From the beaches of Sussex to the battlefields of civil war Spain, The Faithful is a rich and gripping tale of love, deception and desire....

Members Reviews:

Set in Aldwick, Sussex - a poignant tale of war

Iâve been waiting for Julietâs next novel since I read Before the Fall and this was worth waiting for. She completely immerses you in the life and time of those youngsters growing up under the shadow of war and the political stance of Mosley and the blackshirts. From the Pears posters to the Pall Mall cigarettes, this is as evocative as they come.

Woven into this is a story of lost love, lies and hidden secrets. The scene is set in a little village of Aldwick in Sussex and then to London following the march of the Mosley blackshirts and their effect on the population at the time. Growing up then must have been difficult and Hazel has more to cope with than most. Sussex farming life compared to the excitement and danger of London. Morals and parental boundaries out of the window, the story weaves its way around your heartstrings and chokes you up.

The writing in this novel really is quite something â lyrical and poetic. What a tangled web we weave I said after finishing this. And itâs true. Juliet has woven something very special, evocative and moving. A step into the past of politics, young love, frustration and the need for freedom. The Faithful is a snapshot of young life, young love under the shadow of repression.

Left and Right Romance

'The Faithful' is an engrossing, not too demanding story about coming-of-age against the context of an interesting period of British history - the 1930s, with the rise and fall of the British Union of Fascists. It's a story that follows two young people and their respective mothers as main characters, and certainly kept me gripped through all the family secrets, romantic tangles, questions of loyalty and human misunderstandings.

I found the way the author uses the very human motivations that the various characters have for their involvement in politics of various shades most compelling and believable.

Title: The Spencer Rifle

Author: Jessie Cox

Narrator: Mike Hennessy

Format: Unabridged

Length: 4 hrs and 17 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-14-17

Publisher: Jessie Cox

Genres: Fiction, Historical

Publisher's Summary:

Just before and at the beginning of the US Civil War, Indian territory was an untamed lawless place filled with Indians, outlaws teamsters, farms, towns folks, and houses of ill repute. The five civilized tribes were slaveholders, but were radically different than their white counterparts. There were strict laws concerning the abuse of slaves and after seven years of servitude the slave was given his or her freedom and given the choice of being adopted by the tribe. When hostilities broke out between the North and the South the Indians joined the Confederacy and fought in the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern at Pea Ridge, Arkansas. My family built and owned Elkhorn Tavern until the State of Arkansas bought it at "fair market value" and donated it to the US Parks Department. I do not consider this work of historical fiction to be a war book, though set in the Civil War era. It is more about the people that lived in those times and their way of life.

Yet another good read

The writings of this author always manage to keep me entertained, books that I can't seem to put down. Anxiously awaiting his next book, a huge fan!!!

Another great book by Jessie Cox

Another great book by Jessie Cox. Once I started reading it couldn't put it down. He brought out the history and the characters in the book.

Five Stars

Another great book by a very good from, Keep up the good work Jess

Great story: good read

Very interesting story. I have always held an interest in Native Indian Culture but not in the Civil War. And although this story takes place with the Civil War as a backdrop, I have since found a hidden desire to read more about the interaction with the Five Tribes, along with both warring side in the Civil War, and the deplorable treatment of the Five Tribes by the US Government.

I enjoyed the Family references by the author and the mixture of his kin with fictional characters. This was a good story and one that can be enjoyed by a host of genre readers.

To the Author Jessie Cox, thank you for writing a truly fun read.

Hoping there is a sequel!

I just finished reading The Spencer Rifle. I read it in one sitting. That was not my intent, but I found that once I began I could not put it down. I found the historical references and colorful cast of characters very interesting and wanted to learn more about them. I do hope there is a sequel.

Lovely travle story

My mom is German and hard at sight and loves Audio Books.. Loved this one because it is a combination and travel and romance. But it could be cooler apparently if the author appreciated other cultures differences rather than commenting on them..
