    Title: The Shelters of Stone
    Author: Jean M. Auel
    Narrator: Rowena Cooper
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 29 hrs and 54 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-28-13
    Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 20 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
The fifth book in the hugely successful Earth's Children series.
Ayla and Jondalar have reached home: the Ninth Cave of the Zelandonii, the old stone age settlement in the region known today as south-west France. Ayla has much to learn from the Zelandonii as well as much to teach them. Jondalar's family are initially wary of the beautiful young woman he has brought back, with her strange accent and her tame wolf and horses. She is delighted when she meets Zelandoni, the spiritual leader of her people, a fellow healer with whom she can share her medicinal skills.
After the rigours and dangers that have characterised her extraordinary life, Ayla yearns for peace and tranquillity; to be Jondalar's mate and to have children. But her unique spiritual gifts cannot be ignored, and even as she gives birth to their eagerly-awaited child, she is coming to accept that she has a greater role to play in the destiny of the Zelandonii.

    I liked it but...
I was very disappointed in Rowena for changing her pronounciation of Zelandonii. In Valley of the Horses, it was established that it was pronounced Zelandonyee, but in this book (where it's repeated a hundred times!) she changes it to Zelandonee-eye. Soooo frustrating. There were a few other things that got on my nerves: The River she pronounces as Thee River, more often than not. I think this is more an error on Jean's part, though. It is extremely distracting and very unnecessary. This is the last book I care for in the series. The final book is not to my taste at all and I have no desire to purchase the audible version, having already read the printed version.
    Mediocre
Well.. I've been binge listening to these books for some months now and I love the first two. But the 3rd and this was rather mediocre. A lot of repetition and not much really happening. If I had something else in mind to read I'd end the series here as I don't expect the next one to be any better. But I don't have anything else in mind and it's grown into a routine so why not just finish it..? mixed feelings about this one and at times my thoughts wandered some were else as the book didn't really catch my attention as much as I'd preferred. Don't get me wrong; I love the world and the personalities, and I'll use my credit to give the last book a chance.
    Fantastic, Astounding, un-putdownable
absolutely love these books, have been hooked since the very first one and continue to be transfixed by Ayla and Jondular's journey both figuritively and emotionally. The amount of research that I know had gone into these books is astounding. Well done to Jean and all concerned, I can't wait to read the best installment into the lives of this wonderful couple
    Timeless
Would you listen to The Shelters of Stone again? Why?
I could listen to this story so many times. Having already read it, but now finding reading difficult due to failing eyesight, I have rediscovered these old friends anew and am delighting in the pleasure of the stories.
What other book might you compare The Shelters of Stone to, and why?
In my view there is no other book which can compare with this.

    Title: Philida
    Author: Andre Brink
    Narrator: Carla Mercer-Meyer

Length: 12 hrs and 6 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-11-13
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 8 votes

    Publisher's Summary:
This is what it is to be a slave: that everything is decided for you from out there. You just got to listen and do as they tell you. You don't say no. You don't ask questions. You just do what they tell you. But far at the back of your head you think: Soon there must come a day when I can say for myself: This and that I shall do, this and that I shall not.
André Brink - "one of South Africa's greatest novelists" (the Telegraph) - gives us his most powerful novel yet; the truly unforgettable story of a female slave, and her fierce determination to survive and to be free. It is 1832 in South Africa, the year before slavery is abolished and the slaves are emancipated. Philida is the mother of four children by Francois Brink, the son of her master. When Francois's father orders him to marry a woman from a prominent Cape Town family, Francois reneges on his promise to give Philida her freedom, threatening instead to sell her to new owners in the harsh country up north.
Here is the remarkable story - based on individuals connected to the author's family - of a fiercely independent woman who will settle for nothing and for no one. Unwilling to accept the future that lies ahead of her, Philida continues to test the limits and lodges a complaint against the Brink family. Then she sets off on a journey-from the southernmost reaches of the Cape, across a great wilderness, to the far north of the country - in order to reclaim her soul.
    Critic Reviews:
"[Philida] traces the lacerating trajectory of the sins of parents, parents scars like open wounds on their children's bodies. There is an astonishing frankness about the facts of life and a visionary lyricism in relation to these cruel facts. The 'Acknowledgements' section details the genesis of the novel. In its way, it is as thrilling as the book itself. Extraordinary." (Kirkus Starred Review)

    Appalling pronunciation
Great story, but mere torture to follow due to the mispronunciation of Afrikaans words and names.
    Not worth your time
I've always looked forward to Andre Brink's novels, but Philida was pedantic and remarkably dull.
The voice of Philida - word usage and syntax was inconsistent. All the characters were flat and caricaturist.
    Hard to keep up.
I liked Philida. The problem I had with this book was when a new chapter started I had no idea who was talking. The author doesn't tell you ch 8 Philida, or ch 13 Franz. They talk and you have wait and figure out who's speaking.

    Great Entertaining Historical Fiction
This was a delicious book that wove, history, magic, art and science with intrigue and a group of wonderful characters! I can't wait for the author's next book!
    Disappointing debut
I had high hopes for this novel. So many positive critical reviews, a time in history that fascinates me, a country I dearly love, and what sounded like some really interesting characters. All this with Simon Vance's narration? How could I resist?
    But I wish I had.
The basic publisher's book description sets the scene: Emil Larsson encounters a cartomancer at a gaming house, she reads his cards, and thus are set into motion the events of the novel.
As a commercial artist, Ms. Engelmann certainly does have an eye for sensory detail. To name but one example, the reader learns more than she ever wanted to know about the subject of fans, their construction, uses, and "language." While this is the special interest of one character, the Baroness Uzanne, some may find this quantity of detail a bit much. At times it felt as if Ms.

    a Brilliant Story
I found myself really enjoying this book. The author does a wonderful job of storytelling and building up the plot, but I thought he could have done a little bit more to bring it to life by describing the sights and sounds a bit more to bring them to life. The characters are interesting and enjoyable. The pace is a bit slow but that just helps to bring the story to the forefront.
Mr Stillwell does great on his pacing and characterization I really enjoyed his narration.
Entertaining start for a little known writer
"For people who like this sort of thing, this is just the sort of thing they'll like" - Book review by Abe Lincoln
You'll need to be patient and stick through the first 1/4 of this book- in the beginning there is quite a bit of "explaining the situation" by Miller, and not a lot of showing. It's obvious the author has a rabid passion for historical fact, so it takes him a while to settle into his tale.
That said, if you stick with it, you won't be disappointed. Miller does a fantastic job of setting the stage and presenting his characters. Eventually he seems to hit his stride and is better able to share the historical tidbits naturally in the course of the story. Well worth a listen.
Play it at 1.25x and it sounds normal
Enjoyed it overall; I found the narration a bit to slow, as was the plot, but the narrator handled the accents and characterizations very well, and the author did give a convincing sense of the location, notable landmarks make appearances without feeling forced, and the writing felt reasonably period-appropriate.
My only annoyances were that it felt unfortunately predictable, and developments that seemed obvious were often reiterated without adding anything to the narrative.
Regarding the production; there's a wide dynamic range here, so headphones or a quick volume adjustment might be needed. There's also no pause between chapters, which is jarring but never really confused me since the change was obvious.
I wanted to finish it but, I wanted to like it but
Would you try another book from John J. Miller and/or Kevin Stillwell?
Yes, after reading reviews and did some research I would try another. I listened as much as I could but I couldn't finish it. I wanted to love it because I love Lincoln. The narrator was very good.

The Clodians at their most entertaining
If you could sum up The Venus Throw in three words, what would they be?
    Poison, murder and kinky sex.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the character Clodia. I knew her and her brother Clodius from history. Saylor paints them into real people. They had a "reputation" and Saylor expands and fills in the blanks for them. I also liked Bethesda, we get to know her backstory.
Which character as performed by Scott Harrison was your favorite?
Clodia as one of the protagonists and Bethesda in a supporting role
    Any additional comments?
When I started listening to the sub rosa series of books I disliked the narrator and thought that his voice grated and tended to over act the dialogues, but I got used to him and think he does a fair job. Don't let the negative reviews dissuade you.
I listen during my commute and look forward to it. If there's heavy traffic, even better.
    Keeps getting better
I continued the Rosa sub Rosa series a little guarded after disappointment in Saylor's first book.

Fantasy and ancient mythology collide in this tale of earth mothers, volcano gods, and one girls destiny to rule the fictional City of Dove in 3643 BC Mesopotamia. Drawing heavily on the epic poems of the Sumerians, Mary Mackey weaves romance, battle, worship, and passion together effortlessly.

Brilliant and enjoyable way to enjoy history
If you could sum up First Man in Rome, Part 1 in three words, what would they be?
Colleen McCullough has written a brilliant series which really brings history to life and it's an amazing time in history - Western Civilisation down to today is shaped by the events told here. It's the story of the characters and events from the late days of the Roman Republic (through this and later books in the series), all the way to the days of Julius Caesar. While dialogue is created to fit the historical facts, Colleen has also drawn from known documents and incorporated these into the text. It's a masterful piece of work and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a great story and/or loves history.
Excellent - you'll be disappointed to have to stop
Would you listen to First Man in Rome, Part 1 again? Why?
Having already read the books in this series once, and now listened to Part 1 of The First Man in Rome on audiobook, I have to say I'd happily go through it all again. The only disappointment is that the whole series - or indeed, even the whole first book - isn't yet available.
A beautifully crafted story based largely on sound historical evidence, narrated at an excellent pace, with great attention to details such as character voices and a bit of a twinkle in the eye. Now to wait until the rest of the 8 part (I think) series is available on Audible...
    great book BUT!!!!!!!!
this was a great book would have enjoyed it immensely if not for the worst editing job of all time, the sound quality was poor, each paragraph was spliced together with a word missing and there is a 10 min section were there are two conflicting tracks playing at the same time dose know body listen to these thing before there put on sale APPALLING!!! and criminally unprofessional.
    Awful!
What disappointed you about First Man in Rome, Part 1?
    The narration is terrible!
What was most disappointing about Colleen McCulloughs story?
The story is fantastic! I have read it many times, and have the whole series in written form, its the narration that ruins a perfectly good book.
What didnt you like about Stanley McGeaghs performance?
Everything! It was totally monotone. I have never been so disappointed.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Boredom! Listened to half a chapter switched it off and will never listen to it again.
    Any additional comments?
Don't let this audio book put you off the series by Colleen McCullough. It truly is a great read. But buy the books and read them yourself.

    Publisher's Summary:
One late spring evening in 1912, in the kitchens at Sterne, preparations begin for an elegant supper party in honor of Emerald Torrington's twentieth birthday. But only a few miles away, a dreadful accident propels a crowd of mysterious and not altogether savory survivors to seek shelter at the ramshackle manor - and the household is thrown into confusion and mischief.
The cook toils over mock turtle soup and a chocolate cake covered with green sugar roses, which the hungry band of visitors is not invited to taste. But nothing, it seems, will go according to plan. As the passengers wearily search for rest, the house undergoes a strange transformation. One of their number (who is most definitely not a gentleman) makes it his business to join the birthday revels.
Evening turns to stormy night, and a most unpleasant parlor game threatens to blow respectability to smithereens: Smudge Torrington, the wayward youngest daughter of the house, decides that this is the perfect moment for her Great Undertaking.
The Uninvited Guests is the bewitching new novel from the critically acclaimed Sadie Jones. The prizewinning author triumphs in this frightening yet delicious drama of dark surprises - where social codes are uprooted and desire daringly trumps propriety - and all is alight with Edwardian wit and opulence.
    Members Reviews:
And You Think Youre Haunted By Your Past!
In many ways Uninvited Guests is a comedy of manners, particularly British in its wit and depreciating sense of humor.
The Torrington household is preparing to celebrate the 20th birthday of their eldest daughter, Emerald. At the same time, Charlotte, Ems mother, is anxious about the state of Sterne, and whether or not she and her children will be able to stay in the house much longer. Her husband, Edward, leaves on the day of the party to negotiate a home loan in town. Thats the set up. And its all very dramatic comedy with some upstairs-downstairs conventions and budding romances among the young people, but things change when theres word of an accident on the branch line, and Charlottes past, quite literally, comes knocking on the door!
The Uninvited Guests is quiet and funny and creepy all at once, and I found it to be an enjoyable listen. I have only two criticisms: first, while Kate Reading did a fabulous job for the most part, her interpretations of some of the character affectations seemed a bit off to me. Also, like some other reviewers, I felt the pony situation, though it started off being funny, went on longer than it needed.
Still, if youre in the mood for turn of the century wit and a bit of the supernatural you could do worse than The Uninvited Guests.
    An engaging, tightly written story.
Where does The Uninvited Guests rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Near the top and that's saying something. I listen to many classics.
What did you like best about this story?
Sadie Jones writes about family here--how big it is. Who is in? How do people get left out--or maybe ejected? What happens that might enlarge our idea of family boundaries? The characters are distinctive and their attributes drive the story, as should it should be. I love the funny, dark aspect of the railway accident "blasted survivors" who are somewhere in the big old house as the family dynamic plays itself out.

    Fantastic story fantastic narrator.
I absolutely loved this story. It really made me think how lucky we are today. To listen to tales of people having their homes bombed to nothing and becoming homeless overnight is unbelievable, the rations, no petrol and on and on....
I literally didn't want the story to end as there is so much hope through adversity. The narrator is absolutely brilliant, her different voices are marvellous and she is fantastic at helping you to really feel the emotion. So well done to both author and narrator.
