Title: To the Best of Our Knowledge
Subtitle: Shakespeare: Where There's a Will
    Author: Jim Fleming
    Format: Original Recording
    Length: 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-05-10
Publisher: Wisconsin Public Radio (To the Best of Our Knowledge)
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Radio & TV, Great Interviews
    Publisher's Summary:
In this hour, Marjorie Garber is one of the world's premier Shakespeare scholars and teaches at Harvard. Her latest book is On Shakespeare and Modern Culture. She tells Anne Strainchamps how Shakespeare makes modern culture and modern culture makes Shakespeare, and we hear examples from the plays and film versions like Shakespeare in Love.
Next, Jess Winfield was one of the original members of "The Reduced Shakespeare Company." He's now a novelist and talks with Jim Fleming about My Name is Will: a novel of sex, drugs and Shakespeare.
Then, Mark Anderson is the author of Shakespeare by Another Name: The Life of Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford, the Man Who Was Shakespeare. Anderson tells Steve Paulson that no single piece of evidence is conclusive, but all the funny coincidences "prove" his thesis. Shakespeare biographer Stephen Greenblatt isn't persuaded. He demolishes Anderson's theory during his conversation with Steve and insists that Shakespeare's genius is precisely that he wasn't a nobleman.
Finally, Karen Winborn tells Jim Fleming about Classical Comics which have published three versions of Shakespeare plays, pairing various versions of the texts with bright, action-packed, comic book style visuals. She explains the company's goals and their success, so far. [Broadcast Date: March 5, 2010]

Title: To the Best of Our Knowledge
    Subtitle: Good Dog
    Author: Jim Fleming
    Format: Original Recording
    Length: 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-26-10
Publisher: Wisconsin Public Radio (To the Best of Our Knowledge)
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes

    Publisher's Summary:
In this hour, Michael Schaffer is the author of One Nation under Dog: Adventures in the New World of Prozac-Popping Puppies, Dog-Park Politics, and Organic Pet Food. He tells Anne Strainchamps he didn't want to be one of THOSE people who take excessive care of their pets, but found himself realizing that the line between normal and extreme has made a major shift in our culture in the last fifteen years. Pound puppies like Schaffer's St. Bernard, Murphy, are the big winners and Schaffer thinks it's a good thing.
Next, psychologist Stanley Coren tells Jim Fleming how the modern dog developed and why they have such an important place in people's lives. Coren's latest book is The Modern Dog: A Joyful Exploration of How We Live with Dogs Today.
Then, the Dog Whisperer comes calling! Cesar Millan, author of A Member of the Family: Cesar Millan's Guide to a Lifetime of Fulfillment with Your Dog, tells Steve Paulson that dogs need exercise, discipline and affection, in that order. He talks about being a pack leader and eliciting a calm submissive state in your animals.
After that, Temple Grandin, co-author (with Catherine Johnson) of Animals Make Us Human: Creating the Best Life for Animals tells Steve Paulson she worries about pets in our modern society; critiques Cesar Millan's techniques as being appropriate only for large unrelated packs of dogs; and opposes the breeding of so-called criminal dogs.
Maureen Adams tells Jim Fleming about the dogs who were the companions and inspiration of some of our greatest women writers. Her book is Shaggy Muses: The Dogs Who Inspired Virginia Woolf, Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Edith Wharton and Emily Bronte. [Broadcast Date: February 26, 2010]

Title: Studio 360: American Icons - The Lincoln Memorial
    Author: Kurt Andersen
    Format: Original Recording
    Length: 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-20-10
Publisher: WNYC New York and Public Radio International
Genres: Radio & TV, Great Interviews
    Publisher's Summary:
Kurt Andersen explores how the Lincoln Memorial became America's soapbox, and how our yearning to connect with Lincoln speaks to the better angels of our nature; with Sarah Vowell, David Strathairn, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Doris Kearns Goodwin.
Next, in the spring of 1939, opera singer Marian Anderson was banned from performing at Washington, D.C.'s Constitution Hall because she was African-American. So First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt offered Anderson a new venue, the Lincoln Memorial. Dorothy Height remembers how that event sparked a relationship between the Civil Rights movement and the statue of Lincoln.
Then, the Lincoln Memorial has become enshrined in our popular imagination as the back-drop to Martin Luther King Jr's 1963 "I have a dream" speech. Kurt Andersen talks with Professor James Horton about the hope King inspired, and how it continues to resonate at the Lincoln Memorial.
Finally, you might remember the scene from Oliver Stone's movie Nixon: the President went to the Lincoln Memorial in the dark of night and was confronted there by student protesters, who were camped out before a massive demonstration over the decision to invade Cambodia. Former White House aide Egil "Bud" Krogh says Stone got it wrong - Nixon didn't just talk about football. [Broadcast Date: February 20, 2010]

He tells Steve Paulson that our government is collecting masses of data on ordinary people in its efforts to catch terrorists.
Next, Cory Doctorow is a writer and digital activist who works to defend electronic freedom. His new book for adults is Makers, but he talks to Anne Strainchamps about his recent hit for young adults, Little Brother. It's a tale of techno-geek rebellion and Doctorow tells Anne why kids should know how to take their hardware apart to re-purpose it.
Then, Marilyn Johnson is the author of This Book Is Overdue! How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All. She talks with Jim Fleming about how librarians are emerging as heroes of the digital age because of their love for the written word, free speech and open access.
And finally, Robert Laughlin is a Nobel Prize winning physicist and the author of The Crime of Reason and the Closing of the Scientific Mind. Laughlin tells Steve Paulson that the internet is full of information, but it may not be anything you want. Increasingly, the really useful stuff is classified or privatized. In this hour, Moustafa Bayoumi is the author of How Does It Feel To Be A Problem? Being Young and Arab in America. He talks with Jim Fleming about how 9/11 caused him to feel like an outsider in his own country.
Next, Dilshad Ali is the US correspondent for IslamOnline dot net and former Islamic editor for Beliefnet dot com. She's a Muslim who grew up in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She talks about reading the Christian-influenced Narnia tales to her children.
Then, Alaa Al Aswany reads from his novel, Chicago, and talks with Steve Paulson about it. Al Aswany is one of the top-selling novelists in the Arab world, but because copyright protections are weak there, he still works part-time as a dentist. He says this keeps him in touch with the people. He firmly rejects political Islam.
After that, Michael Muhammed Knight wrote a novel called The Taqwacores. He made up the word: taqwa is Arabic for piety and core means hardcore. Since the book came out, it's sparked a punk movement, a documentary and a full length feature film. Anne Strainchamps talked with Knight about how an Irish Catholic kid became an observant Muslim at age 16, and about the effects of his novel on other young Muslims.
Following that, Kurt Westergaard is the Danish cartoonist who depicted the Prophet Muhammad with a bomb in his turban in a Danish newspaper in 2005. Riots ensued all over the world and a death fatwa was issued against Westergaard. He describes his situation to Steve Paulson and feels that within the Danish tradition of humor and free speech, he did nothing wrong.
Also, until January 20 of this year, Swiss philosopher Tariq Ramadan was banned from the United States. His admirers consider him one of the top Muslim reformers. He says Westerners should consider the opinions of the silent majority of Muslims, not the noisy minority. [Broadcast Date: February 17, 2010]

Gilbert followed that book up with a new memoir, Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage. Her advice to couples considering tying the knot: talk about the big three - children, sex, and money.
Next, for years, Bollywood's sappy, over-the-top, romantic musicals drew audiences with colorful hand-painted murals on the old movie theaters. But digital printing presses have put many of the painters who created these murals out of work. In Delhi, one craftsman found new patrons for his movie-mural artistry: American ex-pats in love.
Then, the professional graphic designers at the Austin-based firm, Under Consideration, take a stab at rebranding Valentine's Day. The husband-and-wife team, Armin Vit and Bryony Gomez-Palacio, tell Kurt about their ideas: a new valentine icon, better colors, and a transformed Cupid.
Finally, he's the obnoxious comedian Randy in the Adam Sandler movie, Funny People, and the weaselly civil servant Tom Haverford on the sitcom, Parks and Recreation. Comic Aziz Ansari tells Kurt about the perils of stand-up comedy and his new DVD, Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening. [Broadcast Date: February 13, 2010]
