Mine are more things to think about, rather than ‘power searching tips’…

Re-read the cache page, hints and the logs to see if there’s something there that can help you when you’re at the location.

A DNF is not an admission of failure, but to maximise your chances, look for geocaches that have been found recently, and by people with just a few finds.

Different people play this game / sport / obsession in different ways, and that’s perfectly fine.

Here are a few suggestions from other NZ cachers I asked for ideas:

Don’t rely too much on the technology – stand back, take a breath, trust your instincts, what looks out of place, where would I hide it……. be aware that coordinates may well be inaccurate, especially under trees.

The quickest route to a cache isn’t necessarily in a straight line – don’t forget to look at the map!

Go to events and meet other cachers to get a better understanding of the Geo world, great for teamwork and solving those pesky caches that elude you.

If something looks out of place, it probably is. Geocaches are often right in front of you. A fake looking dog poo (or chewing gum) may not actually be fake – Act with extreme caution…sticks are your friend!

A good cache deserves an appreciative log. Tells the person who placed it, took lots of way point readings and time writing it up that you enjoyed it. TFTC or easy find is like saying “Meh” (OK, I was guilty of that at the start)…

I (and others in the NZ Geocaching community) knew him as waiiti20. I didn’t know him well, but he was a regular at many Wellington events. I realised I’d ‘made it as a geocacher’ when he contacted me for a hint on a cache I’d found and he was having problems with!

N.b. the print version of this was the front page of today’s Dominion Post and included the coordinates for his final resting place!

A lot of great rants already taken here – Poor quality caches put out by newbies is always a good complaint.

Reviewers – Is it required to have a stick firmly implanted in ones arse to become a reviewer or what? Putting out a puzzle cache that is as near self explanatory as it can be and then being asked to explain how to solve it per the guidelines (which yes it’s now in the guidelines), and then having to solve what the Anagram because they think it might be a bad word – WTF? It was ‘Insures – Bras Stuck’ and the coordinates are over a Starbucks on Sunrise. Ended up publishing it a day late because of that. I’d hate to see what some of the ones that take a Rocket Scientist to solve have to go through now.

RESOLUTIONS:

Uhmm… Repeat last year’s’ resolution of cutting my open Jasmer in ½ – Already booked a flight to Atlanta to get Lake Lanier on the way to Geowoodstock.

Matt, Trevor, and Bridget chat (at length) about podcasts, podcast recording, and podcast recording software. Oh, and the highlights of 2016 if they get around to it.

My Predictions from 2015 in podcasting for the Year 2016

I Made some guesses on what was going to happen in 2016 back in Episode 71. Now we find out just how wrong I was.

Soundcloud will no longer be a podcast media host (Wrong, they are still here)

Soundcloud is still here and still nobody has bought them and they haven’t gone out of business (yet)

There will be at least one new podcast media hostt (Right)

Dan Benjamin's Fireside along with a BUNCH of others that didn’t really make a splash yet.

There will be at least one new podcast media host go out of business (??)

At least none that I know of. I'm sure there were some, but they went out with no splash just like they came in with no splash.

I will release “The NO BS Guide to Podcasting”. No Really…. I am going to finish it (wrong)

It will come out sooner or later or never :)

Feedburner will still exist all year long. (Right)

Yup.. Still a pain in my side.

Podcast Movement will be a big success. (no brainer) (right)

PM16 was great! The first one I went to and it was a ton of fun. Reminded me of the good old days in Ontario.

Blab will start charging “something” for service or will start some sort of advertising. (Not talked about in the show) (WTF? They went out of business)

They are just gone. So I don’t know if I was right or wrong. I guess wrong, they didn’t start charging, they just went out of business. Free is a lousy business plan.

A major player in the podcasting space (company) will change names / rebrand. (wrong)

At least, not that I know of. Blubrry went through a sort of re-branding. It’s now “Blubrry Podcasting, a RawVoice Company” in communications. But, really it was that all along.

There will be a major Movie announced that features podcasting in the central plot. (not a documentary or independent film) (Wrong - As far as I know)

Also not that I’m aware of.

Howard Stern will still hate podcasting. (Right)

Happy New Year! Well, maybe a day early. MacKenzie, Todd, and Mike discuss significant changes and updates that happened in PowerPress in 2016. What features came out, changed, what was added to Blubrry, and their favorite projects to work on. A busy year ahead is coming, but MacKenzie is happy to see the year come to a close. PowerPress is going to look a much different come the next release.
