Alec Waugh, 1898-1981, was a British novelist born in London and educated at Sherborne Public School, Dorset. Waugh's first novel, The Loom of Youth (1917), is a semi-autobiographical account of public school life that caused some controversy at the time and led to his expulsion. Waugh was the only boy ever to be expelled from The Old Shirburnian Society. Despite setting this record, Waugh went on to become the successful author of over 50 works, and lived in many exotic places throughout his life which later became the settings for some of his texts. He was also a noted wine connoisseur and campaigned to make the 'cocktail party' a regular feature of 1920s social life.

Likeable Characters

I loved the alphabet kids. I'm raising two, one high functioning autistic and one with ADHD, who are still in elementary school. I would be proud to have my kids turn out like the protagonists in this story. This story was very relatable in that I'm also an officer in the Army as the mom, and it made me wonder how my kids view me. The performance was well done, and the characters were authentic, which could have been gimmicky or sterotyped considering their alphabet issues.

Freaks Like Us

This story is through the perspective of a schizophrenic, so you need some time to get used to the writing, but it's GREAT. The narrator does a wonderful job of getting you into the mindset of the main character, and separating out the voices in his head. I felt real sympathy for the main character throughout the story, all the hurt from the people in his life and the hurt from his voices.

Do not try to listen if you have a headache, but it was wonderful!

Fledgling woman activists

The temperance movement, blue stocking & beginning of women's shelters not sexy topics. However, this is an important insight into the empowerment of a woman who has been demeaned by family alcoholics & abandoned by her father who could of protected her.

I admire Regina's courage to take on tasks that she feels unequipted for or that terrorise her. Also her vunerability as she relates glimpses of her past. Theo really is adorable even though his grand gestures often don't illicit the desired reaction that his serrumptitous ones do.

One thing that really irked me was you could legally beat your wife but hack a bar in a saloon charges were swiftly brought up.

and is my favorite by far

This is the fifth book I've read by Deborah Camp, and is my favorite by far. I LOVE the storyline and all the characters, especially the two leads. LOVE the narration--she was amazing, sounded more like an actor than a narrator. She really added to my enjoyment of the book. I learned a little about the beginnings of women's liberation, and had a lot of respect for the women in the book. Bravo!!

Giannina Braschiâs United States of Banana puts genre in a blender and pours it with seamless liquidity into a novel of exceptional innovation. Set in post-9/11 New York, the book follows Hamlet, Zarathustra, and Giannina as they set out to free Puerto Rican captive Segismundo from the dungeon of the Statue of Liberty where he has been imprisoned by the king of the United States of Banana for one hundred years. The king remarries, releases Segismundo, and as a conciliatory gesture, offers passports to all Latin American citizens. An act of benevolence which upends the global power paradigm and reverberates through the international community with destabilizing effects.

United States of Banana is a hybrid work, mixing post-modern fiction, play format, sociopolitical commentary, and stretches of prose with an evocative carousel of language and philosophical ruminations. It is an English language and literature loverâs dream! Cliché is (or should be) the bain of every writer. In Braschiâs hands cliché becomes critique which repeats and accretes with such intensity that it acquires depth and sinister implications greatly in excess of its daily use. Each way bet

Absolutely loved the story, as usual Di Morrissey created a fabulous journey within the pages. However I hated the narrator, wrong on so many levels, spoilt the whole thing for me. Her phrasing, her intonations left me cold. Any love scene or expressive moment was completely stifled by the hesitant and stiff reading.

Great Story

I enjoyed both books but need to know what happened to Queenie's mum? such a mystery.

Another great Di Morrissey read

If you enjoy Australian drama then this book is for you, it had many story lines interwoven with interesting characters. Di Morrissey seems to really understand the real Australian outback way of life. The book was bought to life through great narration.

Pretty bad

Awful, amateurish political "thriller" about first US woman president. Far fetched story of president who is poisoned, women VP takes over his role (and calls her father a lot on the phone) and then attempts are made on her life so that the Aryan Brotherhood can overthrow the government. Lots of action takes place in a bathroom. I'm not kidding. The breathless narrator recants this absurd tale. No thanks!

It kept me guessing but not one of my favorites. It was alright. I liked the other two better

Ridiculous characterization of a career woman

Would you try another book from D. M. Annechino and/or Tanya Eby?

Totally unrealistic in some of the portrayals of the workings of the US gov't.

I was considering 3 stars until the Epilogue where the protagonist, the President, laments the ticking of her biological clock and decides she will have a baby with or without a husband.

Ridiculous!

The narrator was a tad cloying.
