Wit, realism and soul

This reminds me of when I had a book of classic American short stories back in my school days - each one is a perfect world that leaves you wanting to know more. But you don't need to know more. There's freedom in this, less commitment than a full novel, but no less detailed. In fact, the details are perfect, each well chosen and credible. The writing is smart and measured, with good definition of characters and scenes in just a few lines. Jim Heskett writes with wit and realism and enough soul to breathe life into his characters and their hapless worlds.

Fresh and engaging

Jim Heskett has crafted not just 3 engaging, unique short stories, but a fascinating triptych showcasing certain peaks and valleys of the human experience. While each story stands well on its own, the juxtaposition of the three against each other tells another story in itself. Worthwhile, touching, affecting, and entertaining, I would recommend "Abandoned" to anyone looking for a fresh voice in short fiction.

Short, quick and human nature

Abandoned is a collection of 3 short stories each of which I really enjoyed. Each story is deep, but particularly the second story which had a twist I was not expecting. I'd really love to know more. What happened? Why? Does, or can the relationship change? The first and third stories were enjoyable too and hooked me in. Mr Heskett seems to be a master at the short story, and I look forward to reading his novel, Reagan's Ashes. But if you're looking for a short and quick read, I highly recommend Abandoned.

NOT A FULL MEAL BUT A VERY SATISFYING SNACK

I enjoyed the three short stories in ABANDONED, but alas, they were too short. Perhaps, methinks, their charm was "more" because of "less".

I highly recommend giving yourself a treat by reading about the abandonment portrayed in each of these stories.

I couldn't put it down, then I couldn't stop thinking about it.

I wondered when I picked up this book if it would live up to its promising title. Dreamers and Their Shadows. How I love that title. I hoped I would find in the story some mystery, and maybe the sorts of dreamers who lead us to seek purpose in our busy journey on earth. The book delivered so much. (I'll skip a description of the narrative - you can read it above.) Mystery - are the scrolls real? Dreamers - are the professor and his student who together analyze the scrolls inspired or just insane? The echoes of these questions are heard in the tale within the tale of the charismatic prince - are his leadership and spirituality real? Are his followers inspired or just insane? The satisfying internal consistency of these questions, deftly woven in and out of the contemporary story and the ancient story, lend tautness and a kind of precision to the book. The mystery of the scrolls is the perfect foil for investigating the mysteries of life that dreamers contemplate, and that those dreamers, whether story tellers, shamans, priests, or healers, invite us to share. Ultimately, the truth of the scrolls is unimportant, as is the "truth" of the prince or the "truth" of the visions that begin to appear to the student. The book explains that the shadows of truth we perceive are sometimes caused by our perception of truth's absence, and those shadows of truth are enough to propel us to seek it. In Dreamers and Their Shadows, sometimes the shadows of truth are cast by those who fail us in some way, or in stories that we discover are factually false. And those shadows of truth are also shadows of love, the highest kind of truth there is. Am I sounding insane at this point? Read the book. Maybe I'm insane, or maybe I'm a dreamer. In any case, I loved Dreamers and Their Shadows. It's a wonderful book.

Addictive, enjoyable, and endearing!

I didn't realise that this novel was a sequel when I requested it from Netgalley and having never read the first book in this series, I wasn't sure if AMBER GREEN TAKES MANHATTAN would work as a standalone but work it most certainly does.

Five months into her relationship with Rob and Amber is deliriously happy. She enjoys her job as a window specialist in Selfridges and everything seems to be going in the right direction. But when Rob gets a job opportunity in New York filming lingerie models, Amber fears that this will ruin everything for them, until Rob asks her to go with him. With a sabbatical from her job, Amber and Rob make their way to the Big Apple, where Amber still dreams of being a stylist with the wow factor, and with a knack for making friends easily, it seems like her dreams are about to come true. Being in New York even makes her closer to her loved-up best friend - could life be any more perfect? But as Amber throws herself into the fashion world and all it entails, is she sacrificing her relationship? And is everything as perfect as it seems for those she loves?

What a brilliant, laugh out loud adventure!

Another great book starring Amber Green who seems to face one calamity after another yet these always seem to accidentally promote her role as stylist to the stars. It has plenty of laugh out loud moments - in my case, the sort that have me reading excerpts to my husband to show just why Iâm laughing (and he usually joins in chuckling along, the moments are so hilarious!)Â

Amberâs boyfriend, Rob, has been offered a job in New York that will necessitate him leaving London to work there for three months filming lingerie models.

Couldn't put it down

After having read the first two "Soul" books I was really looking forward to the third instalment. This is a very well-written book that starts with a little intrigue and slowly builds momentum throuhout the first half of the book as it seamlessly weaves past and present story-lines together. When I reached the halfway point last weekend, I quite literally could not put this book down and read the remainder in one session. If you have read books one and 2 (Soul Identity and Soul Intent) you won't be disappointed with Soul Integrity.

Try this one!

I agree with Ellen George in that Soul Integrity is an extraordinary book - as were the first two Soul Identity novels. The stories keep us on our toes, trying to figure out what comes next- as the author takes us back and forth into the lives of the three women all with strong personalities, trying to figure out their own lives. One, hating the thought of divorce, but doing it anyway from her supposed "soul mate". All the characters have to find their way through life, second guessing what Fate has in store for them.

Try this one - you'll enjoy it!

Book 1 & 2 were AMAZING but Soul Integrity surpassed them all! This series will get you addicted like no other but the third book will blow your mind. It is the perfect hook you are looking for and will make you even more excited for what else Dennis has in store! Don't miss out on this incredible book, this author has some major talent and skill with getting his readers into another world. If you need a break from reality, want an entertaining book, or you just want to take an immersive adventure through history and time then you will be very satisfied with this series! I hope they make these into movies, they would be a huge hits!!

It was worth reading

Being it had been such a long time between books 2 & 3 I went back and re-read the first 2. I'm glad I did. Though Dennis does a good job of getting the reader up to speed, it's just not the same. I would have missed quite a bi by not re-reading.
