Another Fine Otter mini-Adventure
The original Otter books were large format hardbacks, and were a little on the pricey side. We loved them and collected them all, both because of the charm, good humor, and comfy appeal of Otter, and the fact that youngest grandchild Arthur's nickname among his brothers was "Otter". It was a treat when these "I Can Read" books came out because they were easy for little hands to hold, were inexpensive, and made for nice quickie mini-reads.
This is a solid addition to the "I Can Read" series. For a short book we get a pretty thorough tour of an aquarium, and we see a lot of classic sealife attractions. As always, Otter is in top form, and of course has to keep a close eye on naughty Teddy. I'd still get the first "I Am Otter" volume for a kid who's into the character, because it is a great introduction to Otter, but these "I Can Read" books make very rewarding Otter "expansion packs". Just a fine, calm and cheerfully accessible series.
Otter Is the Best River Friend!
Well, it's getting so my husband just adds the latest Otter book to his Amazon order, since he knows that will make me happy. And he's right: this book is just as charming and as adorable as the previous books. Having been to several aquariums myself (and had many a small child trailing in my wake), Otter has mirrored exactly my experiences. Although it was a camera lens cap I dropped in the turtle enclosure, not Teddy in the penguin enclosure, mercifully, since I could get my (endlessly embarrassed) husband (we all know him) to retrieve it without the help of aquarium staff. (Otter is able to recover just fine, hooray!) As always, the illustrations are delightful, and since I've spent a bit of time looking at author Sam Garton's work, I can say that the fish are reminiscent of some of his early work. I do hope I'll be able to keep this original copy, since it's all nice and lovely, instead of having to hand it off to the next child I see because I have to pretend I'm all nice and benevolent when really I'm selfish and want to keep it all to myself.
Great!
This book is adorable. You can't help but love Otter. Otter takes a trip to the Aquarium where he gets to check out all the creatures and has a great time. The pictures in this book are so cute and very detailed. This book was for my 6 year old and he adores it and it's a good reading level for his age. A+
