And fast. Rookie punctuation and grammatical errors abound in this ridiculous attempt at a story, telling where there should be showing, and point of view issues whenever there is more than one character in the scene. The protagonist expertly deflects any attempt at empathy on the part of the reader. The greater part of the story is spent with two men, one of them dangerously bipolar, sitting in a diner, telling about the events that led up that point. A potentially interesting interlude involving a daring escape from the city and stowing away on a Russian freighter are brushed over with a couple of lines, in favor of detailed description of the main character's arrival in the far north, where he goes suddenly, and without even a modicum of explanation, from a spontaneously combusting human torch to abominable snowman. No, really. The abominable snowman.

I really wanted to like this book ....

I'm always on the lookout for Buddhist-themed novels and so downloaded this one despite it's mixed reviews. It's been in my library for a while and I've dipped in and out of it from time to time - wanting to like it and wanting to give it a full chance. I don't seem to be able to get into it. The story is a bit thin; the protagonist a bit 'in your face'. I like the idea of the novel, but don't feel that it is pulled off and have decided not to persevere with trying to finish it..

Makes you laugh, makes you sad, a thoroughly entertaining story well told. If you're interested in Buddhism, even a tiny bit, get this book.

Easy guide to Buddha's ideas

This was an interesting listenand an easy start to learning about buddha's ideas. I am encouraged to go and seek more information. It was well read and the narrator's voice was engaging.

The story was interesting in and of itself even if you do not have an interest in Buddhism.

It is also a book to listen to again

beautiful story

I was hooked from begining to end. Funny, insightful and totally addictive.

I got to the end and listened again straight away.

you'll like geoff

I was curious to hear more after I listened to the sample.It starts well, you sympathise with the lead character, and it is an honest portrayal of someone who has lost his direction and finds himself alone, jobless and disappointed with life. The character of Geoff is very likeable, but after the initial chapters you find yourself a bit lost. Its not going to offer you much insight into Buddhism, but it is engaging and realistic characters help it along. Not the best of my choices.

Laugh out load; sad and romantc

After reading the reviews written here, I felt I needed to add how much I enjoyed this book. It is a fantastic story of Fawad,a young boy's world in post Blair/Bushes Afganastan. After I read the story I serched Andrea Busfield Biography and she has indeed lived and worked in Afganastan as journelist so must know a great deal about the country. I don't think I can recomend this this book highly enough. It is pure joy, well read by Mark Medows

What made the experience of listening to Born Under a Million Shadows the most enjoyable?

The storyline, the characters and the way the story was set.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Fawad, main character.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Not really but the book itself is amazingly set, it has inspired me t start reading more, experimenting with various books.

The author has a great storyline which keeps you the edge, wanting more.

A more lighthearted view

Having read Khaled Hosseini, and others about Afghanistan, all of which I would highly recommend, this is a surprising pleasant change. There are some lovely moments, and some funny characters, and seen from the eyes of a child, it gives you a view that even amidst a war children worry about childlike things and they see the world in a different way. Don't come to this book if you are hoping for 'The Kite Runner'...take it is as it is, a nice story about a young boy, in a war torn country, who thinks about life no differently to any boy his age. The author has captured it well.

Wonderfully balanced book.

I listened to the unabridged audio version of this book during a recent long journey and the miles flew by. The author has hit just that perfect balance between putting across a serious message and making a book entertaining. For a book set in Afghanistan it has some wonderfully humorous momnents too.

Fawad is an 11yr old boy, living with his mother in an aunt's house. His father and two brothers are dead and no-one knows what has become of his sister since she was abducted by the Taliban. They have barely enough money to feed and clothe themselves, with nothing remaining to pay rent. Fawad runs with the local children, begging and stealing money from unsuspecting foreigners.

Their luck changes dramatically when his mother gets work as housemaid to a group of foreigners who share a house. She does all their cleaning and cooking and Fawad is allowed to live there with them.

Great southern reading

This is a wonderful book. T. Ryder Smith took a small bit of getting used to, but after a time I came to believe that he was the perfect choice for narrator. The South is well described, as is the sense of family and gentleness. Ms. Kincaid reminded me of why I love living here: Hospitality, family ties, honesty, gentlepeople found nowhere else. These folks have their personality issues and surprised me more than once. The ending was somewhat rushed, but if that's all to complain about, I want more!!

Love and Hitech

Zvika Amit writes a good love story which is entangled in a complicated story of what seems to be hitech/industrial espionage and shenanigans. Barak Sagi, the Hebrew narrator is doing a very good job of narrating clearly and changing his voice and intonation.

Zvika Amit wrote a good story, but the last several chapters and the ending are disappointing, so I cannot give this more than 3.5 stars. There are complex relationships that don't really live up to their potential.

Barak Sagi narrates excellently! He has great diction, and narrates the book with feelings and expression. He has a great voice and I don't understand why sonicbooks don't use him more . Very well done!

The book is easy and entertaining to listen to.

Glad to have some books in Hebrew, great way to enhance foreign language skills!

Story: 3.5 interesting charachters but disappointing end

Relationships/sex: moderately hot

Narration: 5 stars, very nice voice and excellent performance!

Overall: worth a credit!

Note for sonicbooks: really, there is no need to have music between chapters, and PLEASE use more narrators that are acting and differentiate between voices and characters. Learn from Audible productions.

DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!

I am a big Maeve Binchy fan, so I was pleased to see this book for only $5.00. What a disppointment! It isn't even a book - more like a "pamphlet"! It's about 5" x 4" and only 58 pages. This pamphlet is only ONE CHAPTER from the book, "The Copper Beech". So just buy "The Copper Beech" and you're all set!

Dublin 4 was recommended by our tour guide during our tour of Great Britain this summer. These four stories looking a slices of life in Dblin in the second half of the 20th century lived up to her recommendation. This led me to pick up a few more of Mave Binchy's books. I was sorry to learn that this perceptive author chronicling women's lives in Ireland died in 2012. The world lost a great storyteller.

Short but well worth reading it

I have read nearly all of Maeve Binchy's books and love every single one of them. Dublin 4 did not disappoint me, I just wished it would have been longer. It is a shame that Ms. Binchy passed away but her books are her greatest legacy. She brings the characters in her books to life; I especially love her ability making her readers feel like they lived where her characters lived and have some of them re-appear in other books.
