The Power Of Purpose
"The Power Of Purpose" by Michael Catt is a good read for anyone needing clarification for their life's purpose. Written from a Christian viewpoint, the book centers around the Book of Philippians and proposes that the reader can find purpose through Jesus Christ and serving Him and others. About 240 pages, some of the points addressed include:
1. 4 types of joy we can find in the Book of Philippians.
2. Believers need to have tough hides and tender hearts.
3. People who accomplish much live with purpose and learn to focus their efforts.
4. Servants, not self-glory seekers, are the greatest people on earth.
5. Spiritual vs. natural leadership.
6. Purposeful people live by faith in the real world.
7. God hates divisiveness in the church and loves unity between believers.
8. Jesus Christ is to be our source of contentment instead of circumstances or relationships.
9. 3 questions to ask yourself when confronted with criticism.
A very readable, the title smoothly transitions from point to point and contains many good illustrations. Would like to have seen more practical applications. Like many other Christian titles I have recently read, there seems to be a lot of inspiration and not enough is mentioned on on applying those inspirations to our everyday lives. For example, while I really like the exhortation to church unity and mentioning principles like humility and servanthood, I would have liked to have seen more practical ways we can play a part in church unity. In my experiences, I have learned to practice church unity by: not speaking up on everything I may disagree about (unless doctrine is at stake), choose your battles carefully (doctrine, when other believers are unfairly attacked, and similar issues are worth fighting over), serving in church as God calls me instead of wasting time griping and complaining, remembering I have to sometimes set aside personal preferences for the greater goal of unity, and other strategies. Would like to have read more from the author's many years of ministry experience how he has proactively sought and fought for church unity.
