Title: Saint Augustines The Conversion of Saint Augustine

Author: Max McLean

Narrator: Max McLean

Format: Unabridged

Length: 35 mins

Language: English

Release date: 09-27-16

Publisher: Zondervan

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 4 votes

Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity

Publisher's Summary:

After the conversion of St. Paul on the road to Damascus, the dramatic conversion of St. Augustine - as he himself tells it in his Confessions - is the most significant conversion story in Christian history.

Augustine's experience speaks to his dilemma that many people have understood when counting the cost of converting to Christ. He had come to intellectual certainty about the truth of Christianity but he could not embrace it in faith. "The way of the savior attracted me greatly," he wrote, "but I was reluctant to pass through the straight and narrow gate...I was weak and chose the easier way, and for this single reason my whole life was one of inner turbulence and listless indecision. I had found the pearl of great price; but I hesitated to sell all that I had to buy it."

After a monumental struggle - not unlike Jacob wrestling with the Angel - Augustine hears the voice of a child chanting over and over again "take up and read...I snatched up the apostle's book, opened it and read the paragraph on which my eyes first fell...At that moment there was infused in my heart the light of full certainty and all the gloom of doubt vanished away."

A "Listening" Classic of the Christian Faith

Just one of the selections found in the composition:Classics of the Christian Faith. As John Piper says, "This is the heart of his book, the Confessions and one of the great works of grace in history, and what a battle it was. But listen carefully how it was won (It's recorded more fully in Book VIII of the Confessions)" in hisThe Legacy of Sovereign Joy: God's Triumphant Grace in the Lives of Augustine, Luther, and Calvin, Chapter 1, Sovereign Joy, pp. 51-52. He is just one of the hundreds who dive into this masterful work. It's one thing to read, but Quentin J. Schultze, Ph.D insists that "Augustine meant for his spiritual autobiography to be read aloud" and many agree with him. It has its own special effects. And he continues that "Max McLean's moving rendition of St. Augustine's Conversion sends chills down the listener's spine." I agree it's something to listen to again and again. After the Bible, probably the most read book in history. And what McLean narrates for us must be the most known section of it.

Title: "Free Grace" Theology

Subtitle: 5 Ways It Diminishes the Gospel

Author: Wayne Grudem

Narrator: Tom Parks

Format: Unabridged

Length: 3 hrs and 16 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-31-16

Publisher: christianaudio.com

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 7 votes

Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity

Publisher's Summary:

What does real, saving faith actually entail? The New Testament repeatedly emphasizes the need for repentance from sin and accompanying good works as evidence of true belief. However, as theologian Wayne Grudem argues in this book, the teachings of the Free Grace movement - which deny that good works need to be present in the life of the justified Christian - undermine the Bible's teaching regarding saving faith.

Drawing from the works of key leaders within the movement, Grudem raises five biblical concerns he has with the Free Grace movement and critiques its central teachings from Scripture and historic Protestantism. In doing so, he helps all Christians understand the true nature of saving faith.

Brilliantly informative and edifying

Great narration, clear, easy language that anyone can understand.

I didn't know just how much the free grace theology has infiltrated churches in the Uk but am currently fighting against it in my family and the Christians I know, most of which hold to free grace/ antinomian theology.

Title: The Valiant Woman

Subtitle: The Virgin Mary in Nineteenth-Century American Culture

Author: Elizabeth Hayes Alvarez

Narrator: Tamara Marston

Format: Unabridged

Length: 9 hrs and 22 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-25-16

Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity

Publisher's Summary:

Nineteenth-century America was rife with Protestant-fueled anti-Catholicism. Elizabeth Hayes Alvarez reveals how Protestants nevertheless became surprisingly and deeply fascinated with the Virgin Mary, even as her role as a devotional figure who united Catholics grew. Documenting the vivid Marian imagery that suffused popular visual and literary culture, Alvarez argues that Mary became a potent shared exemplar of Christian womanhood around which Christians of all stripes rallied during an era filled with anxiety about the emerging market economy and shifting gender roles.

From a range of diverse sources, including the writings of Anna Jameson, Anna Dorsey, and Alexander Stewart Walsh and magazines such as the Ladies' Repository and Harper's, Alvarez demonstrates that Mary was represented as pure and powerful, compassionate and transcendent, maternal and yet remote. Blending romantic views of motherhood and female purity, the virgin mother's image enamored Protestants as a paragon of the era's cult of true womanhood, and even many Catholics could imagine the Queen of Heaven as the Queen of the Home. Sometimes Marian imagery unexpectedly seemed to challenge domestic expectations of womanhood.

On a broader level, The Valiant Woman contributes to understanding lived religion in America and the ways it borrows across supposedly sharp theological divides.

Title: The Doctrine of Election

Author: A. W. Pink

Narrator: Andrew Reilly

Format: Unabridged

Length: 9 hrs and 20 mins

Language: English

Release date: 03-22-16

Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 9 votes

Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity

Publisher's Summary:

The grand truth of election takes us back to the beginning of all things. It predated the entrance of sin into the world, the fall of man, the incarnation of Christ, and the proclamation of the gospel. A correct understanding of it, especially in its relation to the everlasting covenant, is absolutely essential if we are to be kept from fundamental error. If the foundation be faulty, then the building erected upon it cannot be sound; and if we err in our conceptions of this basic truth, then in just proportion, so will our grasp of all other truth be inaccurate.

This classic text on the subject of election, or predestination to eternal life, is essential for any Christian's library but especially that of the pastor or clergyman.

The best part is that it's brief and to the point

Outstanding insight into the world of hospitalization from a writer who's been there. John Piper also gives tips on preparing before illness strikes. Very encouraging and sobering. The best part is that it's brief and to the point. A bit pricey, but worth every penny.

Food for My Hospitalized Soul

John Piper presents Christ front and center which is exactly what I needed to be reminded of during a recent hospitalization. Give this as a gift to anyone who is facing hospitalization to keep their focus sharp and their mind at peace. When sickness threatens to drown out God's truth, this book draws the love of Christ to the forefront and keeps it there.

Good way to prepare your heart for the hospital

Facing surgery. I found this to be helpful in putting it in perspective and seeing beyond the physical aspects ahead. I heartily recommend this for anyone anticipating a hospital stay or illness

Great lessons to take with you to the hospital.

John points to Jesus as our comforter, healer, and our hope. This book has been a blessing to me as I am facing a hospital stay. I want to do surgery well, heal well, and use this time to glorify God well. John shares his experience on how he did it. Invaluable.

Good stuff

I liked this book

Good Message

This was not what I was expecting and, quite frankly, the format can be a little disconcerting. Matthew writes as if Jesus were speaking directly through him. Regardless of the format of the writing, the message is a good one...Jesus' message of love and forgiveness should be heeded today just as it was 2,000 years ago.

I received this book for free from Audiobook Boom! in exchange for an honest review.

This Was An Amazing Book

This was a terrific listen. In JESUS SPEAKING TODAY, Matthew Robert Payne speaks/writes as Jesus in first person. It's as if you're having a personal conversation with Jesus himself. He covers every topic that concerns us today, yesterday, and tomorrow in a positive, non-preachy way that's easy to relate to. I loved this audiobook. It was truthful, glorious, and I'll listen to this one again. For Christians today, this is a worthwhile book that I'd recommend.

One of the things that made this a great audio listen was the narration. Brian McKiernan sounded terrific. He spoke slowly and clearly. His voice was perfect for this book. It was as if he was speaking directly to me. A one on one conversation that made this entirely cohesive.

Title: David and the Psalms

Author: Michael J. Ruszala, Wyatt North

Narrator: David Glass

Format: Unabridged

Length: 3 hrs and 39 mins

Language: English

Release date: 12-29-15

Publisher: Wyatt North Publishing, LLC

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 8 votes

Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Christianity

Publisher's Summary:

People are fascinated by the concept of royalty. The notion stirs up sentiments of love, admiration, and hatred. We see ourselves in them, and yet we criticize them at times with indignation. While most monarchies today have been put aside or at least limited in their power, the concept of royalty cannot be erased from human consciousness. In the words of Jesus, Christians pray, "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven." The ultimate and most perfect monarchy is that of God himself, the sovereign of all creation.

Through David and the story of the kingship, God taught us about his governance of the world and of his people. David was only human and at times the worthy subject of both praise and severe criticism. But in his relationship with God, we find a model for the people both then and today: suppleness to God's will; wholehearted pursuit of righteousness; sincere repentance from sin; mercy for others; and true worship of God, who alone is worthy.

Looking for a more indepth Study

Besides the streight through reading I would have enjoyed a more indepth history around David, this would be a good book for a new Christian.

Dull and superficial summary of Samuel 1 and 2

Would you try another book from Michael J. Ruszala and Wyatt North and/or David Glass?

No. The author comes across as a very nice guy, but the content is at the level of a junior high Sunday School class. Perhaps written for people who won't actually read the source.

What do you think your next listen will be?

C.S. Lewis on the Psalms.

Which character as performed by David Glass was your favorite?

There were no characters - just a lifeless text summarizing the story of David. David Glass did a great job with a lackluster book.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment and frustration at having lost time that could have been better spent.

Any additional comments?

This book summarizes Samuel 1 and 2 and adds a brief chapter on the Psalms without offering much insight at all. If you just want the story of David as a story I would suggest Wangerin's "A Book of God", if you want to understand the Psalms there are plenty better. I have yet to find something that really connnects the two.

Best Renner book yet!

Maybe it's just the season that we are in, but I feel this is the best book Rick Renner to date! Rick Renner is my favorite author and I have thoroughly loved reading of his revelations and teachings!

I have listened to this audio book 3 times over and have already recommended it to many of my friends.

My favorite part of this book was the in depth teaching of the life of the Apostle Paul. Just as Jesus' road to the cross was excellently described in Paid In Full, Paul's trials and sufferings are brought into such a greater light than they ever were for me. The greatest of the persecution he faced was the endurance and joy he had through it all!

I highly recommend this, and any other book by Rick AND Denise Renner!

Excellent

very informative and educational. Rick has done extensive research in this book. He combines God's word with his testimony beautifully

Dare to step out...

This book is a straightforward, in-depth teaching about stepping out in faith into ones God-given destiny. It helped me to see the pitfalls and roadblocks one can encounter along the way and how to handle them when one does. It also gave me a renewed hope that I can walk in all that God has planned for me

I feel the information was presented in such a way that inspires and provokes one to action. It renewed my determination to keep pressing forward knowing that nothing can stop the plan of God for my life.

I thoroughly enjoyed the narrators performance, as well. His voice was pleasant and easy to listen to for extended periods of time. I also found the Audible Download Manager very user-friendly. I especially like how it kept my place, much like a bookmark.

This book was a word in season for me and, I feel, a must-read for anyone who is serious about walking out ones God-given destiny. I highly recommend it!

Start the new year out right

What an awesome message for the new year and the new you! We all have a destiny in Jesus Christ that is unique to us and that only we can fulfill. What an amazing book for getting you out of your comfort zone and giving you the zeal to press forward to the high calling that God has placed in you! No matter where you are in your race, just beginning or running for years now, to your destiny this book is key in helping you get to the finish line. It answered questions that I have prayed for answers for.
