Sort of meh

I bought this as I really enjoyed The Murder Bag when I found it at a hotel and read it on the beach. But the writing in Man and Boy is sort of meh, and he keeps on going on about his wife's long legs and his girlfriend's face, and I just get the feeling that here's another middle-aged man who likes attractive women. I have a young son, and I could recognize a lot of the family dynamics. But it wasn't enough for me to really enjoy the book.

A must-read for every father of a young boy

Tony Parsons' Man and Boy is one of the most moving, captivating, thought-provoking, and funny books I've ever read. I am an editor and have worked on well over 100 books, and this is the kind of book I would have loved to be a part of. Parsons characters come alive, and I can see myself, for better or worse, in Harry Silver. I have a son about Pat's age, and I could easily see myself in Harry's position--caring for a little boy he's totally in love with and facing the prospect of losing him. Throughout my read, I kept thinking, "There but for the grace of God go I."

The relationship between Harry and his son, Pat, is splendid and believable. I empathized totally with Harry as he learned to be a father to his son, and I laughed and cried as events in their lives together unfolded. Harry's relationship with his father, a WWII vet who reminds Harry of his own weaknesses, is perhaps even more stirring. Parsons explores the joys of parenting and family life and contrasts them with the notions of romance and the heady and carefree days of dating and early marriage. Parsons also hits the nail on the head concerning divorce and what it does to children. The resolution of the custody fight had me both cheering and feeling a sense of loss.

I suggest this book for any man who has a child, who has been married for a while, or who feels he's getting old and wants to "spice up" his life again. Parsons will help you rekindle love for your life and family. You won't take a minute of family life for granted after reading this incredible book.

A big disappointment of the book

I have read the author's "Man and babe" and liked it a lot! This book was brought because of a better rating from the reader. Maybe the translator did a much better job to turn the other book into a very interesting book. Lesser than 50 pages into the book, I had already lost the interest to read the most ordinary cheating on the wife and everything went downhill story. To be honest with you, more than 10 days has passed and I had no intention to pick up this book and rather read other books.

Who thought junk could be so endearing?!

Hard to call a book with "salvage" in the title sweet, but this book is just that. It is a summer in the life of a twelve year old boy, his first spent working in the family business, and a coming of age tale to be sure. It could be set in any of thousands of communities, so can speak to many kinds and ages of people. Odd ball characters who do the strangest and funniest things, relatives you'll both know and wish you could have dinner with on Sundays, and a lovely growth in the relationship between two brothers. This is NO junkyard book. A recommended read.

Paradise Salvage

This book was a wonderful story and I did not want it to end, but the ending was complete and satisfying. My only complaint was that the narrator did not have a Scottish brogue, but rather an Irish brogue. My Mother is Scottish and the wrong brogue was distracting to me.

A Pleasant Surprise

I took a chance on this title because it was on sale. I truly enjoyed this tale that is so different from the types of books I usually listen to. The story was engaging and often funny, you really felt for the characters. It was well narrarated and well worth the listen.

Great Book

This is a great book.

I don't want to say too much because it's an enjoyable story and I didn't have a clue when I took a chance on it and I think that's the best way with this book.

I really liked this book. I don't know if just resonated with my personal history, (I grew up on the upper east coast near a salvage yard) or if it was the time period,(set in the past approx 20 years)or what but the story really clicked. The author got it exactly right.

This is my first 5 star rating.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Jane Austen Updated? NOT

I expected so much more from this book, it was disappointing. I mean, when you mention Jane Austen.....I expected some brightness and it only seemed blighted. I found it hard to like any of the characters, they were not developed well and the story was sluggish. The only reason I finished it was I was on a business trip and had not downloaded anything else.

Book has to compete with bad narration

I have tried to listen to this book several times. Every time I try to listen, the narrator's mouth noises make me switch to another book. I can't tell whether she has "dry mouth" or too much spittle, but I hear it with every word. Sometimes the narration is only due to poor editing, but it is impossible to listen to this book. I think I will have to read it on paper.

Okay, but...

This novel was very uneven. Sometimes I wanted to give it two stars, occasionally four. It was a pleasant read, with a couple of interesting twists, and some good humor. On the other hand, the characters had no depth, some of the humor was bad, and the author missed a couple of chances for a more interesting plot. Also, it contained my pet peeve: overdone imagery, such as "tickled the ivories". (This means play the piano.) Another pleasant but superficial novel about rich and idle ladies in New York.

Trite but delightful

Trying too hard, likes its protagonist; elitist Upper East Side snark for explicitly that crowd; only missing the phrase "flyover states"; these are all criticisms I could make of this novel, and true though they may be, I genuinely enjoyed it.

Think Coen Brothers meets The Princess Diaries. A brash, driven flight attendant snatches a coffin profiteer, and their earnest, honest love brings Melanie back to Arthur's Manhattan home. She wants so desperately to break into the upper crust's closed social circle. The first two-thirds read like a parody of high-society, with charity balls and orphan-disease benefits galore, including even a sultry affair gone wrong, but in its third act, the faade of the bourgeois is sundered violently and characters with their heads in lofty clouds are smashed rudely into the ground. Throughout, the clear-cut "good guys" are earnest and sympathetic, and their honesty is refreshing.

I recommend it.

Fun book

This book was fantastic. I have already ordered Jill Kargman's other book and cannot wait to read it. A great escape. These types of books are my guilty pleasure.

MORE FU FOR YOU!

In this, the third of 14 Fu Manchu books that Sax Rohmer gave the world, Comm. Nayland Smith and Dr. Petrie continue to battle the evil genius Fu Manchu. This book introduces the Si-Fan, a mysterious Eastern organization dedicated to conquering the Western world. The book follows directly from the previous two volumes, and includes several familiar characters. Thus, a reading of the previous books is recommended before going into this one. I'd give this book one star less than the previous two, if only because, as good a writer as Rohmer is, some of the sections of the book are, for me anyway, too vaguely drawn. The geography of the Si-Fan house and of the chapel of Monkswell, for example, are quite hard to picture; your imagination will be working overtime in these sections. (Perhaps this is deliberate on the part of the author?) Several plot points (Hale's mysterious chest, a woman who may or may not be a supreme Empress of sorts) are left in the air, possibly to be resolved in future volumes. There ARE some outstanding set pieces in the book, including the forced operation on Fu-Manchu's bullet-ridden skull and the insect-guarded labyrinth under Graywater Park. The book also features poisonous flowers, an opium den, mysterious codes, a hashish house, kidnappings, fires, leopards, storms and on and on. The pace, as usual for the Fu books, is quite breathless. There's no way that a reader will be bored.

Vintage Rohmer means Classic Mystery

Crane's classic story of Henry Fleming's rite of passage in the Civil War is superbly narrated by Walter Lewis. His voice is extremely versatile and expressive. Although Henry and the men of his regiment are from New York, Lewis's Midwestern accent ably conveys the rural character of the personalities in the work. The narration is done just as well; when hearing of the panic of Henry's regiment at the second Confederate assault, one can sense the terror that can so quickly seize and carry away men in battle.

Having served in combat three times, I can attest to this account. Though fiction, I had similar feelings; specifically about earning the Red Badge of Courage. Having earned the Purple Heart, there's nothing more I'd rather NOT have.

No. I didn't like the way it was read and I didn't like the story at all. It was so boring.

Write for real people not foppish English academics

It was a complete waste of money. I didn't finish it because it bored me and was all over the place.

Bored to Tears

While the narrators don't help, they do have to give voice to characters who signally fail to convince in either of their given places and periods. When touching on grief - the strong opening chapter - there is a heartfelt and convincing energy to the prose, but the intriguing premise grows ever more dull. It was a trudge. Carey can be hit or miss but it is a long time since he missed by this much. Go elsewhere for tears.

This book sounded intriguing and i was reasonably anxious to 'read' a Peter Carey book. However, I got very bored with it. I peservered, somewhat wanting to know what happened, but I just got more and more bored. I do suspect that if I was not the sort of person who loves deep insight into characters and what happens to them, and was the sort of person who is interested in technology then I may have been much more intrigued and found the book enjoyable. The narration was good, which is probably what kept me listening for so long! I may get the book out of the library so I can flip through the rest of it, just to find the outcome, but I really couldn't bear to listen any longer.

I really couldn't get on with this book which was a great pity since I love Oscar and Lucinda which was the first Peter Carey book I ever read. He is clearly a fine writer but it just didn't appeal to me

Great Story

I loved this story. It was realistic the characters voices were great. I will be listening to more of Rachael Treasure books as soon as I can. She even mention one of my great great great etc Uncles Cuthbert Fetherstonhaugh, I was quite shocked when I heard the name I had to rewind and make sure. And he was a hell of a horseman.

Good Aussie Read

I found the narrator very good and one of the better audio books that I have listened to.

Realistic

Yet another amazing book by Rachel Treasure. I love that she understands exactly what it is like to live on the land an be a daughter who is so often overlooked when it comes to the property, but whose guts and determanition brings them all they want. Well done cant wait for her next book.
