    Editorial Reviews:
Jack Bensons measured voice and tenor pairs well with Bret Hartes 1869 tale of California pioneer life, The Idyll of Red Gulch.
Hartes story centers around Miss Mary, a schoolteacher who has recently arrived in the California town of Red Gulch. She meets Sandy, a handsome drunk, passed out under an azalea bush. When Sandy gives up drinking, Miss Mary tests her virtue and causes tongues to wag when they become friends.
Bensons subtle inflections shift as he assumes the roles of Miss Mary and Sandy in this frontier tale of temptation and redemption.

I enjoyed Twisted I so much
I enjoyed Twisted I so much, I got Collection 2 also ! Great Stories, Easy to pickup, Read a Story and Set aside for later.
    Absolutely wonderful story collection!
While I love to read stories, I have a major gripe with short story collections. Usually, some of the stories are great, a couple of them are just so so, and some others just don't do anything for me. A few years ago I bought Twisted, Jeffery Deaver's first story collection. I started to read with the intention of reading a story now and then. But to my amazement I found myself racing from one story to the next and before I knew what had happened I had finished them all! And even more surprising: there wasn't a single bad story in the batch!
The same thing is happening now with his new collection More Twisted. There are no bad stories here. Of course, some of them I like more than others, but all of them are gripping, entertaining and surprising. All the characters and situations are quickly sketched and again and again I found myself captivated after just one or two pages. In fact, the only drawback I can think of with this collection is the central idea of 'stories with twist endings'. After a while I found myself getting into a suspicious mode and while reading a new story I would wonder "okay, if this is not what it seems, what could it be instead???"
For any lover of thrillers and short stories, this collection is an absolute feast!!! I for one can't wait for Even More Twisted....
    O Henry? NOT!
The so-called twists in these stories are contrived. O Henry spins in his grave when his classics are compared to these attempts at twists. Each O Henry I finish with a "WOW." Each of these stories I finish with a "So what?" Mr. Deaver is a prolific and popular writer so I trust his other books deserve 5 stars, but not this one. Returning for a refund.
A Very Good Sequel To Twisted
Unlike many writers out there, Mr. Deaver actually can write a good short story. After reading "Twisted", I looked forward to this and was not disappointed. He mixes his story themes nicely. No two are alike. The length of the stories is very good. Each has a very good twist or two for the reader. The stories basically just roll along until they hit these twists. It's then the reader is rewarded.
I wouldn't mind at all if he came out with a #3 "Twisted."
    Good for short reads
Normally I read full books, as opposed to collections of short stories. But, what the heck, I thought, I'll try this. Well, it's fine for "filler reading" - you know, when you are waiting for the Dr. to call your name, waiting for the kid(s) to get out of school, or having a solo lunch. Stories are good, some predictable and some out of the blue conclusions. So, if you like short stories - some with twists that you didn't see coming...buy the book.

    Publisher's Summary:
In his collection of stories entitled Marjorie Daw and Other People (1873), Aldrich applied to his later prose work the minute care in composition that had previously characterized his verse, taking a near, new, or salient situation, and setting it before the reader with a combination of realism and reticent humor.
    Critic Reviews:
"Immensely popular and frequently anthologized." (Daniel S. Burt, The Chronology of American Literature)

A Short Short at it's best
I homeschool my eleven year old daughter and this winter we began a unit of classic short stories. Majorie Daw was our first selection. We could not have made a better choice! Penned with witty turns of phrase and a brisk pace, my daughter was enthralled from beginning to end and gained an appreciation of the fine art of the short story telling. A great read for young to old alike. A must!
    A Fun Short Story
Fun little short story, told entirely through letters between two 20-something (male) friends. One is laid up with a broken foot and the other tries to cheer him up. Nice plot, although I guessed the ending because it was similar to another book I read recently.
    Interesting and useful
I had to read the entire book more than three times to understand how it has been set, after that I had no problem using it.
    Marjorie Daw
A good book that's an easy read, with a very surprising twist at the end that made me really smile.
    Love
I love these old stories. They are so well written and deserve to be rediscovered. I can not believe it was free.

Genres: Fiction, Short Stories & Anthologies
    Publisher's Summary:
"The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor" is one of the 56 original Sherlock Holmes stories and was first published in Strand Magazine in April 1892. It served as the (loose) basis for The Eligible Bachelor, a film starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes, Edward Hardwicke as Watson, and Simon Williams as Lord St. Simon.
    Editorial Reviews:
At just under forty minutes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor" begins when Lord Robert St. Simon's bride has disappeared. But is this a case of foul play or just a runaway bride? Our good old hero Sherlock Holmes must get to the bottom of this mystery. Walter Zimmerman and cast give bang-up performances. In particular, the variety of voices makes this audiobook plenty of fun for detective story fans. Narrator Watson's voice is pitch-perfect: nervous, breathy, eager to please. Holmes' intellectual, slightly cocky voice also perfectly hits its mark.
    Critic Reviews:
"England's most famous fictional detective is, of course, Sherlock Holmes. So great was Conan Doyle's skill in story-telling that Holmes and Watson have become, in a sense, more 'real' than their creator." (G.K. Chesterton)
    Members Reviews:
Nice plot, another good short story with Sherlock Holmes
Another fascinating adventure from Sherlock Holmes short story series, this one with a very interesting plot: The story entails the disappearance of Hatty, Lord St. Simon's bride on the day of their marriage. She participates in the wedding, but disappears from the reception.
The events of the wedding day are most perplexing to Lord St. Simon as it seemed to him that his bride, Miss Hatty Doran of San Francisco, was full of enthusiasm about their impending marriage. St. Simon tells Holmes that he noticed a change in the young lady's mood just after the wedding ceremony. She was uncharacteristically sharp with him. The only thing out of the ordinary at the church where the wedding took place was Hatty's little accident: she dropped her wedding bouquet and a gentleman in the front pew picked it up and handed it back to her.
After the bridal party entered Hatty's father's house for the wedding breakfast, a former companion of St. Simon, the dancer Flora Millar, caused a disturbance at the door and was ejected. Hatty was seen talking to her maid upon arrival at the house; ten minutes into the wedding breakfast, Hatty claimed "a sudden indisposition" and retired to her room. A short time later, it was discovered that she had left the house.
There are many questions that Holmes must sift through. Who was that woman trying to get in to the wedding breakfast? Who was that man in the front pew? Who was that man seen going into Hyde Park with Hatty? Why were Hatty's wedding dress and ring found washed up on the shore of the Serpentine? What had become of her?
For Holmes it proves rather an elementary case, for he has dealt with similar cases and this one is not so complex to unravel, despite the confusion it causes Dr. Watson and Inspector Lestrade. Holmes finds Hatty and the strange man from the front pew, and the dénouement takes the form of Holmes having Hatty explain herself to Lord Robert. Hatty and the mystery man, Francis H. Moulton, were husband and wife. They parted on the day of their wedding so that he could try to amass a fortune by prospecting.

    Dull
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I was looking for some all-ages short stories I could listen to with my kids. A few of these stories were okay, but the rest seemed really dull, and none of us (I or my kids, ages 7 and 10) enjoyed any of them. In contrast to the dullness of the stories overall, the narrator possesses an enjoyable voice and is quite talented.

"A treat for Rebus fans who like clever mysteries served up professionally and fancy-free; unsolved likewise. It was also an unexpected treat for this reviewer, who does not read much crime, but found herself gripped by Rankin's art as a story-teller." (The Herald)

    Excellent Writing, Disappointing Download
This was my first exposure to Ian Rankin and Inspector Rebus. The writing and story lines are very good and I now plan to move onto the Rankin's novels. However, the download was extremely disappointing. It comes as a single track of 6 hours. There are chapter marks at the start of each short story but nothing else to help the listener navigate around the audio book. Audiobook CDs are all sliced into 3-5 minute tracks for the convenience of the listener. Sadly this simple functionality is missing from this audible download, which is little better than the bad old days of audio cassettes - rewind and fast forward if you want to listen to part of the story again. This was my first Audible download - if others are the same I will be cancelling my membership.

This tale tells us that the only war worth fighting is for the protection of wayward ladies and no-good horses! Never officially ordained as a vigilante, his vengeance on the Amargosa was accepted as having been handed down by sage angels.
Stylized and sometimes leaving narrative form to lean upon the structure of the music bed (and the wind), this story carves an indelible groove on the sandstone and pokes a hole in the water table, surprising us with the treasures of the natural order and the beauty of truth. The dirty blue peacock is dehydrated. The coyotes move very slowly. The moon covers its mouth and laughs. Borax. Mule droppings and railroad dust. Antifreeze. Alcohol. Pharmaceuticals. It's all here.

Curiosity stirred as they inched forward. Then sharp wonder took over. They stood at the edge of a perfectly circular clear space in the hushed green glade. In the center of the sun-lit circle lay a low square dais of dazzling crystal. On the dais stood a low copper couch with strangely carved sides. And on the couch, wrapped in a robe of golden cloth, ornamented with black figures, lay the motionless figure of a man. They stood wide-eyed in fearful awe.
"This must be the corpse laid here for burial by some unknown race long ago!" he exclaimed. "No, he is not dead, only sleeping," she replied. "Speak not so loudly, lest you awaken him!"

    Mysterious Island
Originally published in the May 1938 issue of Weird Tales, this story also been anthologized a couple of times. It was included in the 1961 paperback anthology The Ghoul Keepers edited by Leo Margulies and in the excellent 1993 dream themed anthology To Sleep, Perchance to Dream... Nightmare.
It tells the story of a man who is shipwrecked and washes up on a mysterious island. There he meets a beautiful young woman who tells him that the island and themselves are merely the dream of a man who sleeps on a dais in the jungle. Of course he finds this idea preposterous. After some time spent falling in love with the young woman (who he thinks is only 17) and having adventures there is an unexpected story twist.
This audiobook is abridged in that it is changed from the third person to the first person, so everything is changed from "he" to "I," there is some sentence rearrangement and an occasional sentence is dropped here and there. Otherwise it includes almost all of Edmond Hamilton's words and is a delight to listen to.
My favorite author lays an egg
An absolutely horrible book in every way
