It was at a masked ball at the Palais Royal that my fatal quarrel with my first cousin André de Brissac began. The quarrel was about a woman. The women who followed the footsteps of Philip of Orleans were the causes of many such disputes; and there was scarcely one fair head in all that glittering throng which might not have seemed bedabbled with blood.

    Duel in the Sun
Cousin kills cousin in a duel. Before dying, cousin vows to make other cousin's life miserable by haunting him from beyond the grave. He then -- you guessed it -- proceeds to do so.
Eh. It's an okay story. Nothing particularly awesome about it, but it'll do.

"Here is a nice thing for a lady now - this hand-glass: fifteenth century; comes from a good collection, too; but I reserve the name of my customer, who was just like yourself, my dear sir, the nephew and sole heir of a remarkable collector."
The dealer, while he thus ran on in his dry and biting voice, had stooped to take the object from its place; and, as he had done so, a shock had passed through Markheim, a start both of hand and foot, a sudden leap of many tumultuous passions to the face. It passed as swiftly as it came, and left no trace beyond a certain trembling of the hand that now received the glass.

Looking for adventure, Sunni and Bree take summer jobs on a salmon-processing barge in Alaska. When they dig into the history of the old shipm they're shocked to hear an actual voice from the past!

    Quick Education, Bk. 4
Saddleback Educational Publishing has come up with a brilliant concept for solving a very serious problem: the great decline in reading among today's students. Their solution? Make assigned reading materials exciting! Their Quickreads books are essentially individually printed short stories, designed to entice even the least motivated students into reading.
This confronts both of the major problems with more traditional readers: if they are not mind-numbingly dull, they are excruciatingly didactic, cramming some important "teachings" whether moral, religious, or (these days) politically correct down the throats of children so hard as to turn them off of reading for good.
Sunni McCoy and Bree Emerson are a couple of college students spending the summer working as salmon processors in Alaska when they start hearing creepy rumors about their "floating processor" barge home once having been used as a morgue and, worse, that it's haunted! Curious, they check out the conflicting stories, eventually holding a seance down in the hold. A lot of story gets packed into just 32 pages!
Plus, for what they are intended to be, reading textbooks, they are wonderful. The fact that students who learn to read better and to love reading from these books may soon find them skimpy fare for pleasure reading is not entirely bad, assuming their teachers quickly move them on to bigger and better things in the school library or the bookstore if necessary.

    Great Classic Horror!
This audiobook gives you over seven hours of classic horror with great narration....what else can you ask for!?! I am always on the lookout for any sort of classic horror/ghost story, and this selection did not dissapoint! I enjoyed most of the stories, some of which are so-so. However, the narration of the majority of them was top-notch. I especially liked The Brazilian Cat and The Voice in the Night. Great stuff from great authors. Pick this one up!
    Exceptionally good collection
This is an excellent collection. The readers are all serious professionals. But more than that: they've all taken the time to deliver well thought out, intelligent readings. The reading of "The Voice in the Night" by Sean Barrett is exceptional.
    Gripping ...
Kept on falling asleep, so the narrator must have been good !
Those I listened to were excellent!
    Happy new year!
    Not bad
This should be titled Classic tales of Intrigue!!! Some of the stories are quite good, but none of them hold anything fantastic or scary. Although the author list is very impressive all you are likely to get is the occasional shiver and that's about it. Unless this book is on offer, I would suggest you give it a miss.

    Rumpole on Trial
An excellent book. Very well read. Educational and very Funny. This is one of his best books so if you don't like it don't bother with any other Rumpole books.
    Good short stories well done.
Timothy West is fantastic reading these books. He gets the accents perfect and really does a great job on timing. Not once did I think any of the characters where not quite right. Laughed out loud a number of times with John Mortimer's writing and although this production is a number of short stories, that are not too taxing on the old grey matter, they are enjoyable to listen to. Lovely to listen to whilst commuting home late at night or whilst enjoying that last glass of Port before bed time. Do yourself a favour and have an enjoyable time listening to these works.
    Some of the best stories
Timothy West does excellently, though I wish Bill Wallis's incomparable characterization was available for all the Rumpole books. If the half-dozen I've tried, though, this is probably the strongest set of stories. Funny and full of Mortimer's keen (if jaundiced) observation of humans and their foibles.
    Utterly Brilliant
Timothy West is excellent as Rumpole (so is Bill Wallis but he is a good character actor) and, of course, the stories are intriguing as full of wit. I would recommend all of these to listeners. It makes the morning drive into work fizz and sparkle like nothing else without dulling the senses. If you forget the name of the reader it really becomes Leo McKern. Yup it is that good
    Voice level too variable
I only managed to listen to a short part of this book because Timothy West kept dropping his voice to a whisper so that I had trouble hearing it.
