How to Move Through Systems That Weren't Built for You with Dr. Branch

Listen Later

In this solo episode of the 3 Parallels Podcast, Dr. Jason Branch draws from more than two decades of experience as a therapist, educator, supervisor, and executive performance coach to pull back the curtain on the helping professions and share a side of the field that rarely gets named out loud. Using his Beach and Sandbox framework, he examines the difference between living authentically and operating within systems that can limit growth, access, and opportunity — and asks whose interests those systems were actually designed to serve.

Dr. Branch goes personal in this episode: navigating ADHD, struggling with professional licensing exams, confronting perfectionism, and learning how to move through institutional obstacles without losing sight of purpose. From licensure gatekeeping to neurodivergence to the lived experience gap between who helping professionals are and who their training programs assume them to be, he names the contradictions with the honesty of someone who has been inside the system long enough to see every side of it. The Beach is the bigger life. The Sandbox is the system. And this episode is the invitation to understand the difference.

This episode is especially relevant for therapists, coaches, graduate students, helping professionals, and anyone who has ever felt trapped between who they are and who the world expects them to be. It is for the clinician who has white-knuckled their way through a process that was not designed with them in mind, and for the student who is wondering whether the gatekeeping they are experiencing is about their competence or about the gate. Dr. Branch sends listeners away with three concrete challenges to move through obstacles, show up more authentically, and take one step this week toward the person they are actually becoming.

Life Work
  1. Getting Through Obstacles: Identify one obstacle you are currently navigating. Write down three ways you can move through it without losing sight of your purpose.
  2. Being Yourself: Name one environment where you have been shrinking to fit. Identify one small way to show up more authentically this week.
  3. Growing While Helping Others: Write down one step you can take this week toward the person you are becoming — not the professional you are expected to be, but the person you are actually building.
