How to Overcome Burnout in Your Personal Life - Feeling Hopeless

I’ve discovered over the last few years that it’s pretty easy to become burnt out in your personal life just as easily as in your professional work life. I want to share tips on how we can overcome burnout in our personal lives & not continually feel hopeless & detached from life.

Personal burnout is very much like professional burnout where you end up feeling overwhelmed, emotionally drained & like you aren’t able to do everything that your life demands. It’s excessive mental, emotional & physical stress that drives you to your end. And feelings of being empty, devoid of motivation & no longer caring about what you used to care about is concerning & should be spoken about more. I heard it best said that burnout is a slow depletion of mental & physical resources. And to quickly understand the difference between burnout & stress is feeling burnt out leaves you feeling empty & hopeless vs stress feeling mostly overwhelming & too much.

Burnout has happened to me a lot with certain friends in my life because the relationship was very one-sided & too much emotionally for me to handle or contribute to because of my own emotional issues. But despite knowing I was reaching my end, I kept it going & it would cause major burnout for me that I would just tap out completely for a while.

But your instances of burnout could be different. It could have to do with demands that others are putting on you, like with friends or family, volunteer obligations. You could be dealing with detachment & not interested in anything you were interested in before because of burnout & it all feeling the same. Whatever is causing you excessive & prolonged stress & feelings of being overwhelmed, in addition to feeling helpless, it is possible you’re experiencing burnout.

Ask yourself these questions to determine if you’re struggling with burnout:

  1. Do you feel like every day is a bad day?
  2. Are you often exhausted?
  3. Do you dread your commitments?
  4. Are you bored or overwhelmed in everything you have to get done?
  5. Does it feel like caring about anything doesn’t seem worth it anymore?
  6. Are you noticeably irritable doing certain things?
  7. Do you find yourself just wanting to give up?
  8. Are you less productive or making mistakes you normally wouldn’t?

Other things causing your burnout are not knowing when you tell people ‘no’ when it’s too much, being around too many toxic people, neglecting to prioritize yourself instead of others, believing you can literally do every single thing & lacking the control you want over everything.

Today I am going to share 5 tips on how you can overcome burnout in your personal life. These tips could bleed over to professional burnout if that’s more of what you’re dealing with right now, too.

  1. Create More Short-Term Goals 
  2. Spend Time with People That Care About You 
  3. Find Value in the Things You Have to Do & Celebrate Small Wins
  4. Set Boundaries with Yourself & Learn to Say ‘No’
  5. Ask for Help as Much as Possible
