FIRE stands for Financial Independence / Retire Early, and it's a big movement among personal finance enthusiasts right now. At first, Emily didn't believe graduate school and the pursuit of FIRE were compatible, but the many interviewees she's had on the podcast who are pursuing a PhD and FIRE simultaneously changed her mind. In the introduction, Emily introduces FIRE and the general ways people pursue it and lists the four biggest levers a graduate student could pull to pursue FIRE right away.
