How do you do research for your writing? How do you even begin knowing where to look?

My story deals with some fictionalized portrayals of organized crime, and so to get more of a realistic perspective, I recently read Blood Covenant by Michael Franzese--an autobiography of a man who publicly quit the mob and lived to tell about it!
