In the last episode I told you about the International Children’s Day. Today I want to talk a little bit about the history of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. In the Slovak lesson, we’re going to start to learn the past tense of Slovak verbs and then learn more animate nouns (meaning people) from my new medieval list. At the end of this episode, you can find my second legend about the king Matej Corvin.
Slovak lesson
Past tense of the verb byť - to be - 3rd person singular:
bol (he was - masculine gender) or: on bol
bola (she was – feminine gender) or: ona bola
bolo (it was – neuter gender) or: ono bolo
Simple sentences:
1. On / Peter bol na Slovensku. (He / Peter was in Slovakia.
2. Ona / Zuzana bola v Bratislave. (She / Susan was in Bratislava.)
3. Ono / Malé dieťa bolo v kočíku. (It / A little child was in a stroller.)
New vocabulary:
1. cisár / cisárovná (emperor / empress)
2. kráľ / kráľovná (king / queen)
3. kráľovský dvor (royal court)
4. princ / princezná (prince / princess)
5. rytier / rytieri (knight / knights)
6. šľachta (nobility)
7. šľachtic / šľachtici (nobelman / nobelmen)
8. richtár / richtárka ( mayor male / mayor female)
9. mešťan / mešťania (middle class man / middle class people)
10. remeselník / remeselníci (craftsman / craftsmen)
Sentences:
1. Cisárovná Sisi bola veľmi pekná. (Empress Sisi was very beautiful.)
2. Kráľ Matej Korvín bol spravodlivý kráľ.(King Matthew Corvinus was a righteous king.)
3. Princ bol zaľúbený do princezny. (A prince was in love with a princess.)
4. Šľachta bola stále tam, kde bol kráľovský dvor. (Nobility was always there, where a royal court was.)
5. Richtár bol v meste dôležitý. (The mayor was important in the city.)
