In the Slovak lesson, we’re going to learn more about the past tense of the Slovak verb byť - to be and learn more inanimate nouns (not people) from my medieval list. Lastly, you are going to practice Slovak in two, not one, but two short stories.
Slovak lesson
Past tense of the Slovak verb byť - to be in the 1st and the 2nd person in singular, masculine gender.
1st person: bol som (I was - masculine gender) or: ja som bol
2nd person: bol si (you were – masculine gender) or: ty si bol
Short dialogue:
M: Ahoj, Jakub. Kde si bol včera? (Hello, Jakub. Where were you yesterday?)
J: Ahoj, Martin. Bol som doma. Prečo? (Hello, Martin. I was home. Why?)
M: Ty si bol doma? (Literaly: You were home?)
J: Hej, ja som bol doma, prečo? (Yeah, I was home, why?)
M: V meste bol veľký koncert. (In the city was a big concert.)
J: No a čo? (So what?)
M: Že no a čo? Veď to bola bomba! (So what? That was the bomb! = super good)
J: *Fakt? Také dobré? Bol si tam? (Really? So good? Where you there?) *That’s not a swear word!
M: Jasné! Ty si tam mal byť tiež. Nepamätáš? (Of course! You were supposed to be there too. Don’t you remember?)
J: Nie. (No.)
M: Bóže, ty si bol asi opitý, keď sme o tom hovorili. (Gosh, you were probably drunk when we were talking about it.)
J: Daj pokoj, vieš, že nepijem. (Leave me alone, you know that I don’t drink.)
M: Dobre, nechajme to teraz. Poďme dnes do kina. Čo povieš? (All right, we‘ll let it be now. Let’s go to a movie [theater] today.)
J: Okej. Je mi to jedno. Poďme. (OK. I don’t care. Let’s go.)
Vocabulary:
1. kráľovstvo / kráľovstvá (kingdom / kingdoms)
2. hrad / hrady (castle / castles)
3. hradný múr (castle wall)
4. veža / veže (tower / towers)
5. hradná veža (castle tower)
6. strážna veža (watch tower)
7. nádvorie / nádvoria (courtyard / courtyards)
8. vonkajšie nádvorie (outer courtyard)
9. vnútorné nádvorie (inner courtyard)
10. brána / brány (gate / gates)
11. hlavná brána (main gate)
Short story:
1. Bolo raz jeden hrad.
2. Na tom hrade bol jeden kráľ.
3. Ten kráľ bol veľmi múdry.
4. Jeho hrad bol nedobytný.
5. Hrad mal vysoké hradné múry a štyri veže.
6. Na hrade bolo vonkajšie a vnútorné nádvorie.
7. Kráľ býval vo vnútornom nádvorí.
8. Kráľovná tam nebola.
9. Kráľovna bola na návšteve u svojich rodičov.
10. Kráľ bol preto veľmi smutný.
