Today, I’m talking about March, the month of books in Slovakia and answering some questions from my listeners about perfective and imperfective verbs. Then, in the Slovak lesson you will practice using both forms in short sentences. You will also learn how to say “I will write to you” and “I like reading” in Slovak. At the end of my episode, you will find a short story about Matej Hrebenda in Slovak.
1. (Imperf.) čítať (meaning to read); (Perf.) prečítať
The second phrase for today is: “Rád/Rada čítam”, meaning: “I like to read”.
Obyčajne čítam noviny ráno, ale dnes ich prečítam večer.
(I usually read the newspaper in the morning, but today I’m going to read it in the evening.
2. (Imperf.) kupovať (meaning to buy); (Perf.) kúpiť
Lyda nerada kupuje ryby, ale pre hostí ich kúpi.
(Lyda does not like to buy fish, but she is going to buy them for guests.)
3. (Imperf.) jesť (meaning to eat); (Perf.) dojesť:
Ešte stále ješ? Nie, už som dojedol.
(Are you still eating? No, I have already finished eating.)
4. (Imperf.) piť (meaning to drink); (Perf.) napiť
Daniel nerád pije minerálku, ale dnes sa napije, nemá na výber.
(Daniel doesn't like drinking mineral water, but today he will drink it [just one time], he has no choice.)
5. (Imperf.) variť (meaning to cook); (Perf.) dovariť
Ako dlho budeš variť tú večeru? Dovarím ju za päť minút.
(How long will you cook that dinner? I will finish cooking it in five minutes.)
6. (Imperf.) učiť sa (meaning to learn); (Perf.) naučiť sa
Už sa to učím tri roky a neviem, či sa to vôbec naučím.
(I've been learning it for three years now and I don't know if I'll ever learn it.)
7. (Imperf.) cestovať (meaning to travel); (Perf.) docestovať
Kde sú vaši susedia? Ešte stále cestujú? Nie, už docestovali. Vrátili sa včera.
(Where are your neighbors? Are they still traveling? No, they have already finished traveling. They came back yesterday.)

Matej Hrebenda žil v rokoch 1796-1880.
