Yesterday I spoke about don’t “fuck the pain away.” Today I’m talking about how to actually do that in practice not in theory.
We don’t stay with discomfort because we’ve been taught to distract. We also don’t stay because we’re continually being told we’re not good enough as we are. So why then would we want to stay with ourselves if what we’d find beneath the surface is so flawed?
But that’s a false story.
Staying with discomfort is uncomfortable, yes. But if we can stay with it for even just three breaths before consciously moving onto something else, we not only create a moment of relief for ourselves, but we are creating just enough space between what we feel and what we do in reaction to that feeling, to make a choice. And when we can consciously make a choice with the understanding of what motivates our actions, well, then, we’re finally engaged with life. Life happens through and with us vs to us.
I explain this and more in this episode. I speak about staying with the discomfort, awareness, noticing our motivations and intentions for what we do and how to stay in the present vs getting caught in the story of the past or the projection of the future.
