Have you ever wondered why is it so difficult to stick to our goals? And more importantly, what can we do about it?
To find out, I sat down with Dr. Heather McKee, the UK’s leading lifestyle behavior change specialist. During the course of our conversation, she went through the process of how to successfully change your habits.
Here are the three main takeaways:
1. Find a powerful reason for you to change
The first step is to find a powerful reason for you to change. And it has to be a reason that benefits you, not someone else.
For example, if you’re trying to lose weight, your reason might be to improve your health or feel more confident in your own skin.
2. Find habits that are enjoyable
The second step is to find habits that are enjoyable and not just punishment. If you’re trying to eat healthier, for instance, focus on adding in more fruits and vegetables instead of cutting out all of your favorite foods.
3. Focus on the process, not some arbitrary goal
The third and final step is to focus on the process and not some arbitrary goal. In other words, don’t focus on losing 10 pounds, focus on making healthier choices each and every day.
So if you’re struggling to stick to your goals, remember these three steps: find a powerful reason for you to change, find habits that are enjoyable, and focus on the process.
