How to Use Instagram to Build Your Brand

Art gallery owner and creative entrepreneur, Alyssia Leggett, takes us on her personal journey to find flexibility in her work, to live out her creative vision for her life, and to break free of imposter syndrome.  After working for 18 years as a marketing and advertising executive, Alyssia found herself struggling to balance the demands of work and family.  She always had a creative nudge in the back of her mind to go out on her own and start something...but she had never even worked at an art gallery before.  Less than 2 years ago, Alyssia said yes to her inner voice, and used her Instagram account to launch her business. 

 

Alyssia named her studio “Jenner McGinn” after her two girls’s middle names - who are named after her grandparents - two of the creative inspirations in Alyssia’s life.  The girls are Alyssia’s business partners, and are very involved in her at-home business rearranging art as it comes in the door. 

 

Alyssia used her existing Instagram feed of artists and creatives she admired as the springboard for her new business. She drafted personalized messages to the artists she admired and authentically shared she was new, she was eager, she had a solution to their need (to help them promote their own work!), and she would be honored if they took a chance on her. Some ignored her, some said no, and some said yes. Alyssia did not do any paid advertising to get her business off the ground. She shared authentically with her current network of friends and family, reached out and followed up 1:1 with target clients in her social media feed with personal messages. What she found was that the artists helped HER learn the business. The artists and Alyssia formed genuine relationships in which they offered her support and encouragement as she started her new venture. Women supporting other women in business is a real and powerful thing!
